In honor of me reading "It's Good to Be the King" by James Robert Parish, here comes the Mel Brooks film-by-film thread.

    First up, "The Producers" (1968)

    The trailer:

I rewatched the film this afternoon. Could this be the funniest first 10 minutes of any film ever made? Instead of dry exposition we get hilarious exposition.

    1. Mel Brooks is a terrible director.

    2. Read Funny Man: Mel Brooks by Patrick McGilligan. You'll be less than enthusiastic about Mel Brooks as a human being.

I've seen The Producers a bunch of times, but watched again on Saturday night as the local PBS aired it. It never gets old!

I just watched 2017 Darkest Hours about Winston Churchill.
My favourite scene from Mel's Producers is the Kenneth Mars first scene about Hitler and Churchill ....... and his telling of how Churchill couldn't pronounce Nazi correctly ......... Narrsi.
It was this way in the Churchill biopic.

Probably Peter Sellers favourite scene too as he performed it on TV chat shows after championing the film.

I've seen bits and pieces of the 2005 remake, and I thought that it just wasn’t that good.

    I prefer the original instead.

I get a kick out of the two little moments that foreshadow "Young Frankenstein".

Kenneth Mars saying "beck" (as in "Put ze candle beck") and Gene Wilder comforting Mars with a "There, there" to which he bewilderedly responds "Where, where?" (a la "There ... there wolf. There castle.")

You're three films too early ... but thank you. :)

I can recite huge chunks of dialog from the Producers.

    Woman: Who do you want?
    Max: I beg your pardon?
Woman: Nobody gets in unless I know who they want. I'm the "con-see oige". My husband was the "con-see oige" but he's dead. Now I'm "con-see oige".

As I remember it (and I could be wrong), before the smash Broadway play and movie remake, “The Producers” was a cult movie ... the hidden treasure for fans of Brooks’ mid-‘70s smash hits to seek out on local TV. I think the first time I saw scenes from this film movie might have been on the syndicated show that Tom Bosley hosted, “That’s Hollywood”.

This was a film ahead of its time.

  20. ‘The Producers” changed my life as a comedy along with Monty PYTHON.

I remember seeing this on TV in the 70s and coming into school the next day. We all had the same reaction: a mixture of 'Did we just see...?' and 'Wow!' Loved it ever since.

There's a lot of Sylvester Marcus in L.S.D.
