I was a member of VMP until earlier this year, and have around half a dozen of their pressings — all of them are excellent, flat as a pancake and sound great, and their packaging is top-notch (tip-on jackets / heavy stock gatefolds). Having said that, I'm passing on this Dead anthology release.
Short answer: you're missing something. Longer answer: Every year, and even every tour has its own unique feeling. The July 1978 shows at Red Rocks are the bands first visit to this epic venue, and they respond with very strong performances that display interesting twists in the setlist, along with inspired jamming and exploration. In my experience both shows, particularly the second sets, can take some deep listening to connect to the space that Donna and the boys are exploring on the mountain outside of Morrison. It is my sincere wish that you are able to connect with the deep vibe of these shows.
I'll spend some more time with it. I put on the last disc to listen to Terrapin Station. Jerry's vocals sound kinda shaky getting started but the energy builds as the song progresses. Will do the full discs after this.
We did do that. We do not do that anymore. There was no memo, but if you’re not Canadians playing hockey, it doesn’t work on men over 50.
First viewing of 12/31/79 - never noticed it was around who gives a rip about missed lyrics when he’s blazing away like this??? Plus Bobby is high in the mix and he’s killing it BIG peak on Jed!!! Wow!!!

I wonder about that with the band Diarrhea Planet. Do they ever wish they'd used a name like Dying Planet instead. Rocking band in any case
I've never heard of this "the boys" reference before. It was always the Dead, or Jerry, Bob, Bill, etc.
What should I listen to right now? I'm off May '77 and have thoroughly digested the June '76 box. It's pretty hot here today and hot days usually make me think of those outdoor summer shows from the late 80's and early 90's. Someone toss out an undiscovered gem!
PL: This is not, repeat, this is not an alert. This is only a a test. BW: But it's the real thing nonetheless. Ramble On Rose, Dave's 34 6/23/74
