Not sure how definitive the setlists/search is at jerrygarcia.com, but my search turned up the earliest version being Oct 13, 1974 Saunders/Garcia band.

I've had it in house for a few weeks but just got around to Dave's 34, and so far, CD1 is pretty mesmerizing. 3 more discs to go!

I've only listened to it like 1-1/2 times and I haven't touched the bonus disc yet. I want to be able to really give it some attention.

Really do love this Jai-Alai release, will get many listens. Among my favorite 74s, joining Dick's 31, Dick's 12, Wall o' Sound Road Trips, and Dijon from 30 Trips. (Alright, the big jam from 5/19 is indeed pretty big, too.)

I stated earlier this Dark Star hints at playfulness. I retract, it's certifiably playful (Jerry 'n Phil) and, in fact, I'm calling it my favorite DS of '74. It just fits that quintessential June '74 freeform mode. As such, I don't have to compare it to '72 Dark Stars, it just goes down easy in its own time.

Release 6/20 and I'll have a satisfied mind.

  8. great news - hoping mine gets to the southern interior of B.C. today - rainy weekend is a perfect excuse for bunkering down with 34, a bottle of scotch and a bag of gummies.

Amazing Phil towards the end of the jam. This is a top version although so many of these 74 versions are of this similar ilk and most are spectacular.

This was my first thought, the great sound. But this series has seen a lot of '74.

edit: Five volumes and two bonus discs.

Experts would say that this is probably the best of the previously unreleased shows. Maybe 2/23, 5/12, 7/21 or 7/25? 6/30 maybe

but I’m no expert and havn’t heard any of the above. I’m most interested in 2/23/74

I know someone here loves 9/20 but I’m not so sure about that

Not an expert, but I would agree with that. It's been a favorite show for years.
The vibe and the playing, especially from Jerry is pretty unique to this show I think.

What else from '74? I don't know, pretty much every 2nd set big jam is interesting.
Release full show from '72-73 as much as possible, but I have no problem with curated sets from '74. Give me the meat, that's were '74 sticks out to me.

More 74 is always better. Maybe a '74 box in 2024?

It’d be a King Crimson type of deal: great music with less than great sound.

Interesting. 2/24/74 is a top ten favorite show for me (at times top five). And has been since my earliest cassette trading days. All these years, I’ve never heard 2/23/74. Seems a good long weekend with plenty of time around the grill to remedy that!

Given the proclivity of TPTB for releasing only whole shows and making boxes consist of shows from the same tour and/or venue, there really aren't any viable options. The only shows that have not been released in whole or in part are 2/22, 2/23, 5/12, 5/25, 6/8, 6/20, 6/30, 7/21, 7/25, 7/27, 9/14, 9/20 and 9/21. Assuming that two shows do not a box make, the only candidates are 7/21, 7/25 and 7/27. Assuming that these shows are in the vault and viable, that would give us two long Playin's a Dark Star--> Slipknot! jam but no long second set jam on 7/27 (but another long U.S. Blooze). They're also not from the same tour, but there you go.

Does Dave's 34 highlight the "wall of sound" better than any other '74 recording? I think it might. At least the ones I've heard.

Do the partial official releases preclude a show from being fully released later? Specifically thinking of 74 shows like 6/18 and 8/6 and stuff like that.
