  2. Not to depress you but many think Twilight Time is going out of business. One of the co-founders died recently and with the state of the media business in flux, it will be a shame if Twilight Time leaves us.

Nick Redman died nearly 18 months ago now, and the company he co-founded has not shown any significant signs of disruption as a result of his loss.

I don’t have any insider knowledge, but I haven’t read anything substantive about the company going under. They maintain a niche place in the market, bringing mostly forgotten second- and third-string Sony/Columbia titles to home video. Their limited, online-only distribution model means they are better placed to survive the current Coronavirus crisis than most.

Of course, the very name Twilight Time was conceived as a nod to the end days of physical media, but that was nine years ago.

I don’t own a huge number of their releases, simply because much of the stuff I’m interested in is available here in the U.K., in cheaper, often nicer editions. But they did sterling work with the Peckinpah titles they had access to, and the Woody Allen catalogue was a major coup for them. I watched their BD of Manhattan Murder Mystery just the other night; a title not available here.

Yes it's a shame. It does seem that the sites that are doing the best are the ones who focus on the horror and porn of yesteryear. Depravity is always hot. The DVD market is likely going to become kind of fixed pretty soon - less and less new stuff and everyone who is interested drawing from the same pool of available resource. It might drive prices up on some titles but I guess we'll see.

I picked up a few Woody Allen titles in my last haul. If Twilight does stick around, I hope they do more of these. Both Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy and Alice look gorgeous. Even Bananas looks pretty good, all things considered. I watched that last night and had forgotten how utterly surreal it is. Alice is actually pretty weird too. Seeing Mia Farrow getting zonked on opium is pretty funny.

Vinegar Syndrome Black Friday sale starts tomorrow. Any other sales of note for the holiday weekend? I know it's only a holiday in the US but that doesn't seem to stop them from marketing the heck out of it.

My new thing is to shop the thrift store DVD sellers on Ebay and sort them by cheapest first. The bargain basement is full of interesting things lately. I've found some great docs on Blue Note, Don Rickles, Roscoe Holcumb and Side Car Dogs, A David Carradine Tai Chi video, lots of ephemera collections from the 50's, some hilariously weird amateur DVD-R's and a Giantess fetish video that is really a lot of fun. I know everything in the world is online these days, but a lot of this stuff I would never even know it existed if I hadn't stumbled on these discs. Cultural archaeology through DVD's. Cheap hobby too!

Just scored at the local pawn shop. All of these were 50 cent DVDs

    The Blob (Criterion)
    Vampyr 2 disc (Criterion)
    Macbeth 2 disc (Criterion)
Creature From the Black Lagoon 3 movie collection
    The Great Race
    Abbott and Costello Volume 3
Fall of the House of Usher (1960)
    Phantom of the Opera (1943)
    Bad Day at Black Rock
    Kid Gallahad
    Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster

Sucky part was they had the Criterion "House" but no DVD inside, and I am 90% sure it was misplaced in a different case in the store because Macbeth was too.

I'm thinking the discs themselves got shop lifted, regardless of the cheap price.

Some discs also get accidentally swapped around before it gets to the pawn shop. Then put out into the store with seeing if the disc was inside.

House had the 1st disc of Macbeth, so I would bet the House DVD is in a different case. Unfortunately, too many grubby DVDs to look through.

I've mostly kept my DVDs, if only for those rare times when I want to watch a movie and there's only a DVD player available, like on some laptops, and some vacation rental places we've been to. To save space when I also have a Blu-ray, I'll place the DVD in a paper CD-envelope and stash it inside the Blu-ray case. Then I put the DVD case to other uses.

I've never seen it. I'm now on a kick to collect 80's classics. That's why I bought it.

The Family is an overlooked comedy. Michelle Pfeiffer is great as the mom who gets a little testy when she can't find peanut butter at the grocery store.

If you’re region-free, the Eureka Masters of Cinema Region B release comes highly recommended. Still the only BD available of this film anywhere in the world. It is dual-format, too.

I buy 4K UHD films, if they are released on that format. If not, a Blu-ray is perfectly acceptable. And if the film is only released on DVD, I buy that. I enjoy watching movies and TV shows. I prefer the best quality available, but I can live with a DVD version, if I have to. I watched "Murphy´s Romance" on DVD this week. No, it didn´t blow me away with the technical qualities, but I focused on the tory being told. No problem.

Picked up at thrift stores this week: "The Andy Griffith Show" seasons one and two, as well as a 50th anniversary (16 episode) compilation of "The Andy Griffith Show".

    I do:

    1) They're incredibly cheap
    2) There's a LOT of stuff on DVD that isn't on Blu-Ray
    3) While Blu-Ray is visual perfection, DVD is "good enough".

That's why I still buy them!

Prices continue to fall but it seems that counterfeits are on the rise too. I've gotten a few DVD-R's from Ebay that weren't advertised as such, but was also shocked to find a couple of seemingly brand new commercial DVD's that I bought on Amazon actually turned out to be fakes. I usually avoid anything where the price is just too good to be true but an effort was clearly made to make them look as professional as possible. So far, I have had no problem returning them but still it's a bit unnerving, especially if you are an exploitation geek constantly on the look out for hard-to-find titles. I have no problem with DVD-R's if I know that is what I am getting and they are priced accordingly. It's the only way to see some things. But still, buyer beware...

Yes I still buy dvd for one reason only. Many of the films I want arent out on bluray
However, I absolutely wont pay some of the prices of dvd, just i wont be ripped off by excessive bluray prices. prices in the UK are significantly higher than in the UK, esp for bluray. Thats why bluray has been a commercial failure in the UK. same goes for 4k bluray
I am after some classic Ian Carmichael comedies, but I wont pay £10 or more for a dvd.
On amazon, i have a wishlist and check almost every day for price drops. No price drop means i go without.
