It would be soooo much easier to list sequels that were good at all, much less as good or better than the original.
I know - not as much fun. This thread could go on for pages.

I'm not sure I enjoy Gremlins 2 more than the original, but I do enjoy it just as much, & for the exact reason you stated; they are very different movies.

  6. Hannibal (although Red dragon was a good remake of Manhunter), Alien after Alien 3 (although Alien 3 isn’t perfect, it’s good enough as is). After T2 no other Terminatoe film should have been made although I Liked the Tv series quite a bit.

    The Mummy (The Hammer films)

Gleason was by far the best thing in it. Almost makes it watchable. Almost.
    Mac Davis ? Gack !

I enjoy both, but the crazed energy of "G2" makes it a bit more fun!

Though I didn't like it at all when I saw "G2" theatrically, mainly because it was so different.

Same with "Back to the Future 2" - those sequels departed so much from their predecessors that they caught me off guard.

Eventually came to like both, but left theaters unhappy in 1989/90! :)

  22. The Hermit

The Hermit Wavin' that magick glowstick since 1976

It wasn't a remake, it was a new adaptation of the same-titled novel. I actually like Red Dragon a lot (though it seems to have become something of a forgotten movie!); the script is better than The Silence of the Lambs (both written by Ted Tally), I find it a more interesting story than the latter film, and although Brett Ratner did a surprisingly solid job directing, that film suffered by being a good 7-8 years too late... they should have made it in the mid-1990's before the serial killer genre overall became cliched and worn out, before they tried to make Hannibal Lecter some kind of anti-hero in the self-titled film, and also when Anthony Hopkins still could have passed for being a decade younger than he looked in the aforementioned ...Lambs.

That being said, they really should have got someone like John McTiernan or Paul Verhoeven to direct Red Dragon, whenever they chose to make it... in the hands of a great director, that film could have been a masterpiece...

When I first saw Halloween Resurrection, I thought that someone really should have stopped that from being made.

Any Black Christmas not directed by Bob Clark.
    Any Home Alone after 2.
Many (if not all) Disney video sequels, not to mention "mid-quels".
Any Star Wars movies not the original trilogy.
    Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
    Any Alien film after Aliens.
    Any Terminator after 2.

  25. You could argue both ways really. While they did go back to the source, it’s not like the original exists out there without Brett Ratner being unaware of,it. Even if they made choices that were different for Red Dragon because of Manhunter, it was a response to the first film.

I think the potential For Red Dragon is better than Silence but I think Demme would have been a better and -refectory choice to,direct it (As I recall, he turned it down). Hannibal though is an abomination-an example,of DeLaurentiis desire to make blockbuster movies without having any of the artistic sense or taste that worked for his Independent early films from Italy. I rarely found the films he Produced to be great much less produced. They were always looking for the next big trend rather than creating it (this is from insight gleaned from working for them-they had a chance to produce or at least distribute Blood Simple and turned it down).
