Laine had no idea what the movie was other than a western. He was asked for a classic Frankie Laine western ballad and thats what he gave them. Brooks didn't want him to see the joke in the title so they explained it away.

I only know this from John playing it with Little Nicola in “Magical Mystery Tour”.

    Next up: “Young Frankenstein” (1974)

The Mel Brooks narrated trailer. Spot the brief bits (3 of them I think) that didn’t make the movie.

I still can't believe these both came out in the same year. Possibly the second greatest comedy film of all time!

    "Abby"

    "Abby who?"

    "Abby Normal"

For-sure Urban myth (and a suburban myth at my high school): "blucher" is the German word for glue (it isn't)

Maybe-not-so Urban myth: Mel Brooks THOUGHT it meant glue and thus gave the character that name

I couldn’t find a clip with Gene Hackman, so Teri had to do.

Inspector Krogh (the source of Inspector Kemp) doesn't show up until the 3rd Frankenstein movie ("Son of ..."). YouTube is unfortunately short on clips. Inspector Krogh had his arm ripped off his body by the monster, hence Inspector Kemp's rudimentary prosthesis (apparently available at your nearest lumber yard). Watching the Inspector Krogh scenes, Kenneth Mars really didn't have all that far to go - the character was ripe for parody.

    Where to start!

My favourite comedy of all time.
Made more so by using the original equipment from the 1930's films (which as a young boy I loved watching late Saturday night on BBC2 with the other Dracula, Wolfman films) and the choice of making it in B&W.
Always using many lines from it.
Even the off hand ones that don't appear funny first time eg:
'My old dad ....... the things he'd say to me'
'What are you doing in the bathroom day and night, why don't you get out and give someone else a chance'.

'Don't inhale until the tip glows'.
The best cameo ever by Gene Hackman.

Kenneth Mars brilliant again (how come he wasn't in Saddles, can he only do German accents!)....... But they all were.

I think I fell in love with Madeline Kahn after seeing this.

I'm going to dig this movie out whatever box it's in this weekend for yet another viewing.
    Possibly the best comedy ever.

"Pardon me, boy. Is this the Transylvania station?"

    "Werewolf"! "Wherewolf?" "There...wolf!"

"A riot is an ugly thing...but, I think it is just about time that we had one!!"

"Me, a poor blind man and you, a mute...an incredibly big mute".

"Igor, will you give me a hand with the bags?" "Certainly. You take the blonde, and I'll take the one in the turban."
