All May I've been on Santana kick and I can't stop! I would like to compare my impressions with yours. What are your favourite Santana albums from the late 1960s-1970s period? And why?

I can't find any functioning thread and decided to create one. I included official studio and live albums from the band as well as three solo/collaborative Santana albums. You can pick 5. Feel free to comment on Santana's later albums or anything that is worth listening from the era I chose.

    Here are my picks:

    1. Santana (1969). So far it is my favourite. A pure raw energy, a couple of hits including blistering Soul Sacrifice. I am usually not a fan of bands have percussionists as permanent members because they tend to overplay sometimes. But here it is masterclass of tasty polyrhythmic soloing through and through.
    2. Abraxas (1970). Basically for the same reasons and you can really here Santana's progression on every album recorded.
    3. I am not a big fan of Santana III so far. Not enough great melodies and too much of a bit of pointless jamming. Caravanserai (1972), Welcome (1973) and Borboletta (1974) are my Top-3 jazz fusion Santana LPs.

I have a good friend who is a bigger Santana fan than Santana is so I basically have heard everything there is to hear by him and I own a fair amount of his stuff. Also met him once, charming guy.

His early work was very strong and very original so no surprises that they seem to dominate the poll. I have a quirky choice though that I'm very fond of and that is "Festival". I love the way the first song "Carnaval" segues into the soaring guitar of "Let The Children Play" and at the other end the joyful "Maria Caracoles" - whose lyrics I am still to find a reliable version of on the net - bookends the album.

The first has always been my favorite. The next too were fine albums as well. I saw around 1969 and they were great. In March of '89 I had the great fortune to see Carlos Santana play guitar behind John Lee Hooker with his band. What a great show!

I dig Festival too! Though I find 'Maria Caracoles' a bit cheesy. Weirdly enough I don't like that much when they go full latin.

I like how he (they) developed throughout the 1970s incorporating various styles (psychedelia, fusion, jazz, funk, soul) while maintaining their core - latin rock.

Moonflower does have some repackaged songs, but a real solid collection with great sound quality.

Yeah, I could have easily put it at #2. Tough battle for second place.

I agree. I wonder though what would have happened if he'd ever been part of a rock supergroup where he was one of a number of talented performers, writers and dominant personalities.

I don't get it. Carlos is a leader but based on the credits, many other members had significant contributions and they are all great musicians.
So would do you mean by "being a part of a rock supergroup"?

Marathon is very good. Though I’m not a fan of Alex Ligertwood’s vocals.

“Aqua Marine” is my favorite track. Listen to it in headphones and you’re in for a real audio treat. So relaxing and soothing. I wish it would go on longer.

I mean a group where there is creative friction because there are competing ideas. If a group's name is that of one of its members it is almost certainly his group and any experimentation will be limited to what he wants. There is only one member of Santana who is indispensable and that is Carlos Santana.

Every one of those records on your poll I would not want to be without... but these three for me. What a story.

Just such amazing passion and talent.
