This new track goes back to soft bulletin days. best thing they have done in 20 years? radiohead was my fav current band in the late 90s but after kida i switched to coldplay for a brief year or two but the flaming lips took over quickly after coldplay released viva la vida.
Almost sounds like an outtake from The Soft Bulletin. I admit that I’ve really lost touch with them over the years, but I like this. I wish Wayne would retire the boy-in-the-bubble shtick, though.
Not bad. Pretty-sounding psych-pop is just one of the many colors of Flaming Lips music. It doesn’t define them, IMO.
I think it sounds fantastic, the melodies kind of remind of the Besnard Lakes track “The Specter”, and that’s not a bad thing. After almost two decades of near obsessive Flaming Lips collecting, their last collaboration “Deap Lips” is the only thing I’ve skipped. Really looking forward to their new album. In the meantime I’ll just spin “The Terror” again.
Interesting. I dropped out of buying their albums after At War With The Mystics where they seemed to take several wrong turns. I went to a 'Lips concert in Manchester, UK, where Wayne did the "boy-in-a-bubble" stunt. Classic Manchester crowd, somebody knifed the bubble and it quickly began deflating with him stuck in there...
On March 23, 2020, Drozd announced that the band's sixteenth studio album, titled American Head, is due for release in the summer.
With a title like THAT..... I..uh...I don't know how to complete that sentence... Let's just say....I want less 'jammy', and more 'weird-y'...
New Lips is always welcomed. I really love Oczy Mlody and The Kings Mouth and still play them often. Also, you can't go wrong with having Kacey Musgraves do background vocals on your song.
another song released. also in the vein of bulletin/yoshimi its not some wierd song. the past couple albums they put 1 or 2 normal songs and a bunch of instrumentals. lyrics are very interesting in this song.
It’s a love song I guess. I mean, I’m not sure that I’d ever be so devoted to another human being to the point that I’d call them “my religion”, but it’s an interesting point of view, surely.

I'm certainly more devoted to my wife than I ever have been to any invisible deity. Another video came out today but I've already ordered the vinyl and think I'll hold off listening to any more until I can hear the album in full.
I love all three of the videos they’ve released so far from American Head. Those, plus the performance on Colbert’s show have me greatly anticipating the new album. Release date is 9/11 eh? I wonder what they’re up to with that. The boy in the bubble schtick may not be new, but it has a new poignancy to see them in quarantine gear while doing it.
I understand the WB 'shield' is no longer allowed at 'Warner Records', BUT....... That skeleton-in-the-triangle logo is pretty mediocre....
I just got the UK version of The Soft Bulletin three minutes ago and it has the skeleton in the triangle on the cover now. Weird.
Obviously 9/11 stands out, but I don't think they're really "up to" anything. It lands on a Friday as the labels gear up for fall releases. Already have a number of items on my shopping list with this release date.
Looking forward to this. Haven't enjoyed the post-Embryonic albums as much as prior works, but that's an easy "complaint" as they were on fire in the '90s-'00s as far as I'm concerned. Have still liked at least parts of The Terror and most everything since.
