I'll be honest with you-- of all the Vacation films that Chevy was in, Christmas Vacation is the only one that, for me, has enough funny parts to justify my having it on physical media (I have it on Blu-Ray now). It has a few rough sections, but the humor abounds and is there in spades, and that's why (at least IMO) no other Vacation film will do it for me.

Has anyone mentioned Neighbors, yet? The Ackroyd/Belushi, Cathy Moriarty fiasco from 1980? 1981 maybe, IIRC?
It had few funny moments here and there but it was mostly painful.

Guess I should've read this before I posted!

Count me (and the wife) in the "Vegas-Vacation-doesn't-suck-as-much-as-people-say' camp!
-Wallace Shawn as the dealer who can't lose!
-The low-rent casino with the 'pick-a-hand' table!
-When the daughter says, "Johnny's gonna take me to see the world's largest thermometer', I though it was a double-entendre until we moved to Vegas about a year after the film came out....

    From my review:

"Wallace Shawn makes the most of his running character as a sadistic blackjack dealer. Without question, Shawn’s bits are the best parts of Vegas. He’s lithe and funny and interacts nicely with Chase. "

It was such a disappointment after reading the hilarious book.

I saw it at the theater and didn't think it was funny. I think one of the problems with the movie was that Belushi and Ackroyd should have swapped roles, with Belushi playing the crazy character and Ackroyd playing the normal character.

Parks and Rec? I don't remember him in that. He was a lead in Community, and that did end badly after a couple of seasons, from what I remember.

My bad, it was community. Joel McHale has given some very scathing interviews about his experience working with Chevy.

I like Billy Crystal and John Goodman, but I just thought that the movie was really unfunny.

My mom and I were just talking about it earlier, and she finds the movie to be unfunny.

I agree. I enjoyed the first two movies, but one thing I didn't like about this movie is that Austin Powers is still adjusting to modern times. Plus, I just didn't find it that funny.

"Goldmember" is substantially funnier than the 2nd film - that's the dud of the 3...

International Man of Mystery wasn't funny at all at the time (Who's the boss of #2 for instance) but it's funnier now because it set up memes that were repeated in the subsequent films. Plus Austin is a brilliant character which makes it all the more watchable.

Nah, "IMOM" was pretty good - it was the most genuine of the bunch, as it's the only one that exists solely as a labor of love. The other 2 exist for $$$.

"IMOM" and "Goldmember" are both entertaining and pretty close in quality. "Shagged" just tries too hard - I think all involved felt so much pressure to make a Big Blockbuster that they forgot the charm of the first film...

The pacing of IMOM just isn't there. Jokes go way beyond their use by date. And the Laugh In device between scenes isn't even well done. Goldmember is really slick and actually looks like a big budget film. IMOM looks like So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Apparently a lot of people liked "IMOM" or there never would've been "Shagged"!

To be clear, I don't think "IMOM" is a great movie, but man, that was as grass roots a success as you'll find in the movie industry.

It was only the 35th top-grossing (US) movie of 1997, but it just caught fire on video.

"IMOM" wasn't a big budget film and it didn't try to pretend to be. It was a love letter to an era and that was its charm...

Supposedly, this and "The Great Outdoors" are intertwined, in terms of how bad a movie can be. :p

I remember Mike Myers talking about the genesis of Austin Powers, which came out of the question "What ever happened to swingers?"

I love the Jerry Seinfeld show, but never find his "stand up act" at the end of the show funny at all....

Sometimes I wonder if a director who's got issues he needs to work out, just tells the studio "it's a comedy", to get bankrolled.

 OR-! If you're Lorne Michaels....
