To me, a good method is to focus a lot about the instruments.
For instance, listening to Archie Shepp without to have listened to Ben Webster does not permit to appreciate him deeply.
There are strong connections between musicians of different styles and ages playing the same instrument.
Unfortunately, at least here in Italy, Jazz is often considered a set of separate styles and ages and so one loses the historical perspective of jazz.

One of the public domain sets. I have everything on it but for a new fan it's a steal.

I bought Mingus x5 and A Love Supreme to compare them to the Analogue Productions SACDs. They arrived on the day of my previous post, so I haven't had time to compare yet. I also have Live at the Village Vanguard, Impressions, Live at Birdland, Crescent, Alfie.

The are currently twenty discs planned, eighteen released so far:

    March 18, 2020:
    • John Coltrane - Ballads (UCCI-40001)
    • John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman (UCCI-40002)
    • Duke Ellington & John Coltrane (UCCI-40003)
    • John Coltrane - Live at the Village Vanguard (UCCI-40004)
    • John Coltarne - Impressions (UCCI-40005)
    • Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract truth (UCCI-40006)
    • Quincy Jones - The Quintessence (UCCI-40007)
    • Roy Haynes - Out of the Afternoon (UCCI-40008)
    • The Gil Evans Orchestra - Out of the Cool (UCCI-40009)
    • Count Basie and the Kansas City Seven (UCCI-40010)
    April 22, 2020:
    July 29, 2020:
    • John Coltrane - Selflessness Featuring My Favorite Things (UCCI-40014)
    • John Coltrane - Both Directions At Ones: The Lost Album (UCCI-40015)

Reissue in Hi-Res CD format (UHQCD format x MQA technology). Uses the DSD master produced in 2020 based on the original tapes, and the master is converted in in 352.8kHz/24bit high resolution (perfect for MQA-enabled audio players). Green color label coating. Comes in a slim case packaging.”

Only these twenty Impulse! UHQCDs with MQA have new remastering. The other cheaper Impulse! UHQCDs without MQA released these past months don't.

They can also be reliably ordered through CD Banq Taiwan.

I'll get back to you how they compare in brightness to the APOs. What I can tell you is that these discs don't have extra compression. For Live at Birdland the volume dial could be turned al the way up to about eleven o'clock on my analogue NAD amp. There was also no boosted bass, usually apparent in the studio tracks of that album. I don't think the highs were boosted either.

Also, a quick listen to track 1 confirmed that A Love Supreme does not sound like the flat transfer from the Platinum SHM-CD from 2013 (UCCU-40003)

Weather has cooled down a bit here, so I plan to do some more listening today.

Thanks for the recommendation, and I do like the free jazz stuff! I definitely intend to go deeper down this rabbit hole. For now I have The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra, Lanquidity, On Jupiter, and the 2CD compilation In the Orbit of Ra (which has a good mix of stuff, including a few freer tracks). I like it all!

A beautiful, natural sounding CD that can be turned all the way up like Live at Birdland, though obviously a better recording.

Another photo of Louis Armstrong with his music system in a trunk for relaxing during a tour.

Note that he traveled with two reel to reel tape recorders and a turntable

I've read that he recorded conversations with musician friends when he was on the road. I know there's gold in those tapes!

The four Coltrane first released that I have sound really good. I just ordered three more. So ALS doesn't sound like the Platinum SHM-CD. .. is that a bad thing? ;)

When Louis said (above post) that he tried lots of tape recorders, that was very true. He was always getting different machines.

Here is his last set up in his personal office/den at his home in Queens.

I am thinking that all of those stick-on labels on the equipment may have been added by his wife after Louis passed away (assuming she used the system), because they do not appear in any photo with Louis present

    One of my favorite images.

    Louis playing for his wife.

Like Sonny Rollins' wife, who was also named Lucille, Louis' wife nearly always traveled with him on tour.

I am glad I bought this again. Superb. No extra compression, but it did have some 'help' compared to the flat transfer like all other releases of this album, vinyl or digital. Whoever did these 2020 remasters got it exactly right.

@davidpoole Since you listen to vinyl your standards must be high. I don't think these are inferior to the APOs, on the contrary. But I find it hard to recommend one over the other to you. For the Coltrane discs among the twenty MQAs I have so far heard which do not already have APO SACDs, though, these new remasters are a no-brainer IMO.
