As a writer and/or director, John Hughes made over 30 movies, but he seems best-remembered for a handful of teen/high school movies from the 80s.

Which of these six do you think is the best?

Discussion: feel free to rank the 6 from best to worst!

I did a John Hughes poll last year on the forum: Pick Your Top 3 John Hughes Movies

Based on that poll, which had all of his movies, to your teen list, it would be

    1. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
    2. The Breakfast Club
    3. Sixteen Candles
    4. Pretty In Pink
    5. Weird Science
    6. Some Kind of Wonderful

I would definitely rank Some Kind of Wonderful above Weird Science. Ferris would be 1 on my list followed closely by the Breakfast Club as my 2. Those 2 films stand above the rest, at least for me.

Sixteen and Weird are the only ones I see pretty regularly. The others I haven't seen in years. I give the nod to Sixteen, Paul Dooley puts it over the top, but Weird has some great scenes in it.

Based on what I can remember, I'll go:
    1. Sixteen Candles
    2. Weird Science
    3. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
    4. The Breakfast Club
    5. Some Kind of Wonderful
    6. Pretty in Pink

Toss up between Sixteen Candles and Some Kind Of Wonderful for me. The first is funnier, but SKOW works for me on the romantic comedy level. I like the whole group, though.

Ferris Bueller get the nod for me. "The Museum Scene," set to an instrumental version of the Smiths, is one of those scenes that chokes me up every time... even seeing it out of context. It's just beautiful.

Ferris Bueller. Also showed off Jennifer Greys skill at comedy acting.

  12. From a fun to watch perspective, I would pick Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Everything seems to fall into place and fit just right in this movie

From a relatability perspective, it would be The Breakfast Club.

I did see you poll - sorry I didn't link to it as well.

Felt this one was different because it a) only allowed one vote and b) didn't include all those non-teen movies to contaminate the pool! :)

Haven't seen Some Kind of Wonderful, though I've heard it's similar to Pretty in Pink.

"SKoW" is very close to remake territory, just with reversed genders - and a
reverse ending, as the "oddball" love interest wins in "SKoW", not the "hottie".

"SKoW" is a vastly superior movie. "PiP" is mostly awful but "SKoW" is really charming and engaging:

I'll check it out at some point. Pretty in Pink is my least favorite John Hughes film, that I've seen
thus far. I saw it once in the theater and didn't care for it. Watched it recently and that still held true.

I believe there's a Blu-ray release of "SKoW" in the pipeline, though I could be wrong.

I thought I heard it was gonna be part of the "Paramount Presents" collection that finally got "PiP" a Blu-ray release, but I might misremember...

Just wish the cd wasn't so low volume. Maybe I'm just being old and crotchedy, but my cds of Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2, Cocktail and Hiding Out don't have that problem.

My old copy was destroyed 15 years ago, but I can’t say I remember having an issue. The volume dial is useful in this regard :)

Apropos of nothing, this film has become somewhat of a meme in our house. I use the title to complete my girlfriend’s sentences, much to her annoyance.

    For example:

GF: “The weirdest thing happened at work today. I looked out the window and there was some kind of ....”

    Me: “Wonderful?”

    GF: “LET ME FINISH!”

    Try it, it’s great fun.

I'm in the tiny minority that hated Ferris Bueller's Day Off from the outset. Nothing in that movie worked for me when I was the target demographic, and it works even less now.

I loved Weird Science, and I'd watch it again today.

I agree, I don't get the love for Ferris Bueller. Although I grew up in the '80s, I didn't see it until much later, so that my have affected my perception of it. Matthew Broderick's character seemed too smug to be relatable. But it's not Matthew himself, as I love him in War Games.

The Pretty In Pink / Some Kind Of Wonderful debate is fun to think through. I can really get into PiP, especially the outburst that Duckie has when Blane shows up late for his date with Andie. That was a great scene. And nobody does a smarmy unlikable teenager like James Spader.

I need to give SKoW another viewing as it's been awhile since I've seen that. It looks like it's on Amazon Prime now so maybe I'll get to this soon.
