I have purchased a few used CDs. I tell myself that the person I purchased them from is ethical and did not keep any digital copies. I am very good at rationalization.

In my case that would be a stupid thief. The resale value of my CDs is much higher than that of my hard drives.

No. They want the hard drives, not the content on them.

I don't care if they kept digital copies or not. As a second-party purchaser, it's not my concern.

My current best harddrive is a 4 TB one, which was about 100 EUR new. I have one or two records that (according to discogs anyway) fetch 100 or so EUR in the collector's market, and also some CDs that fetch 50 EUR each or so. A thief who knows his stuff would want to steal the most valuable items of my CD and record collection rather than the hard drive.

Then keep an itemized print-out of your Discogs collection and it's value next to your CDs and LPs to help the thief make the correct decision and leave your harddrive.

Yes, I better pin it on my front door so the thief doesn't burgle my next door neighbours instead.

Yes buying used CDs is ethical. That is as long as they're a licensed and official product. Buying and selling pirated or bootleg items is not ethical however it's done and quite a lot depending on the subject matter. I remember going into stores in the 1970s or 80s and seeing bootleg vinyl albums of rock concerts that were not available through the label who the artist worked for. People would justify selling them and the purchase because the label didn't make these concerts available. yet I'm sure zero profit from that album went to either the label or the artist.

Steve Wariner comes to mind. The wife at that time wanted to go and I wasn't thrilled with the idea, but went along to be supportive. Based on his radio hits and music videos from the 80s and 90s, I thought of Steve's music as sanitized and generic. As it turned out, Steve sounded great vocally and was a terrific guitarist. His band sounded great and gave the songs more energy compared to the recordings. I developed a better understanding and appreciation for Steve's music. Being a fan of first generation rocker turned country star Bob Luman, I was happy to learn that Steve played in Bob's band during the 70s and actually wrote 'Lonely Women Make Good Lovers,' which is a well-known song recorded by Luman and later revisited by Steve himself in the 80s.

How about the pirate products being widely available locally, and the officials having being to be purchased as an uber-expensive import I wouldn't fork out the money for anyway ? What would be of my Darkthrone collection if it weren't for the russian pirate editions ? Half of it would be pirated FLAC files on my HD instead of the physical product. So not ¨harming¨anyone by not buying what I could not afford anyway. Unethical ? You bet !

Pirates exist because of people wanting to save money but if they're willing to trade quality for savings then pirates will always exist. You can't stop pirates they will be out there but you can make choices and you can be more discerning. And yes sometimes we can't always afford the product because it's off the market and it's pricey ,but you have to make a choice. For me I'll just be patient and wait till a legitimate copy comes up for sale even beat up or missing things rather than buy a pirated copy and be disappointed in some way or another later.

I'm not disappointed in my pirate Darkthrone CDs ( even have 3 with 2 titles in one CD, pressed, not CD-R); they sound and look great. Of course I'd rather own originals, but they're unobtanium and/or you have to pay prices you'd not believe.

I think you misunderstood me. I was speaking in general. You, me, and other people would prefer to own the original, So you may not be disappointed in the quality of what you have for the price that you paid, but maybe you're just a little disappointed in the fact that you couldn't own the original. That's what I'm saying.

Spot on; I'm totally BUMMED by that fact. The russian booties are but a mere consolation. As a matter of fact I was once on my way to buy a somewhat pricey (albeit available and realistically attainable) CD, and was offered an identical bootleg for a fraction of the money at another record shop in the same commercial center. I hesitated for maybe 2 seconds and went to pick up the legit one.

It's all relative in a manner of speaking. You may not have gotten exactly what you want but you still got the music and you're the possessor of it and can access it anytime you like. So in my opinion who is the winner and who is the loser? I feel you're the winner, and those who hesitated are the losers.

Sometimes I look at my club CDs and even though they aren't official releases they still are the music and I can still enjoy it. I thought about replacing them and then I thought why? They're good. I'll just buy official releases of other music that I appreciate as well.

Oh, I have to tell you that one of the last things I did last year was visit a horror convention and met Doug Bradley and Ashley Laurence. I have a picture of him in his British officer's uniform personally signed to me. It's inscribed see you in hell. And he has amazing handwriting.

To admit, this thread was first started in response to a recurring poster's protestations in one of the wearisome Streaming is Wonderful threads.
Ethically purchasing used compact discs: ?
A certain poster(can't recall exactly, RingoBaby maybe) remarked, more than once, that streamers were good and faithful music consumers; contributing to the financial welfare of the artists they listened/streamed. And further, that buying a second hand CD or LP was a sign of a disloyal penny-pinching fan, Denying the artists of any income or reward for their music.
I was happy to see that over 600 forum members responded.

 Saaay what!?!? Of course club CD's, such as BMG, Columbia House etc., are legitimate releases. Some even have unique sonics.

Lol. Of course they're legitimate CDs, however there's a stigma that they're not as good as the CDs that were sold in the stores. Some people have an aversion to them but that they're marked up with BMG or Columbia House make some a lesser in value to some.

I used to think that 70's record club albums were 'mass produced' and therefore inferior. Don't know why I thought that, they were pressed at the same plants as all the other versions. Now sometime I think they sound better

Perception is reality and sometimes we get these silly notions in our head and that's what we think most of our lives.

Oh, when you mentioned "even though they aren't official releases" I guess I misunderstood you. I'm glad some people have an aversion to them leaving some that have better sound than their original release for me.

Interesting. I have a couple that I have the official release and the club release. I'll have to compare them. I got the club released when I bought lots of other CDs and it came within the group.
