    Rush (What You're Doing): Around 4:10, the first drum hit on the final part is slightly cut-off and faded-in.
    Permanent Waves (The Spirit of Radio): There's a click near 3:50, though it's not just on the Atomic. It's actually present on every CD except the 1997 remaster, but I don't know whether a superior tape was found for that one or if the click was edited out digitally.
    Moving Pictures (Tom Sawyer): Part of the intro is cut-off on the 02 Atomic. The discs with a matrix ending with 03 and up (including all US Atomics) were corrected. However, all Atomics have slightly later fade-ins during the intros of Red Barchetta, The Camera Eye, and Vital Signs.
    Grace Under Pressure (The Enemy Within): Click at 2:24.

    To help out with your search, some Atomics are the same as the Anthems (though 2 or 3 are level-shifted). These titles are Fly by Night, A Farewell to Kings, Permanent Waves, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, and the live albums.

    While the RUSH Atomic CD's are all decent and several are excellent there is at least one exception:

    Avoid the WG Mercury Green Arrow as well as the 01 and 02 matrix-ed WG Mercury Atomic Moving Pictures. The beginning beat of Tom Sawyer is missing and the CD clips. It's the type of mastering that too some gives old CD's a bad name. Although given the Green Arrow commands $200 and up I'm sure those who have paid that coin will state it sounds great :sigh :)

    For more issues see the excellent post above this one.

    As for Fly By Night - I've never heard a good sounding digital version. If you are able to acquire an original vinyl or a vinyl rip that is best way to go.

    I do have a complete WG Atomic Collection (14 CD's). It took me 11 years to find the 1st album "in the wild', but when I did it was only $6 USD. At one time it commanded $50+ here on the forum. The point is you may want to look for the US version instead on that one.

    Thanks for the info. So do the US and WG Atomics share the same mastering? Also, looking on ebay, I'm kind of confused as to why some cd's say made in USA on the actual cd but the back cover says printed in Germany and vice versa.

    Is that click heard on the Anthem ANMD-1045 version?

    No, the Atomic is the only CD that has it.

  6. Pretty common in the early days of CD mastering—as different pressing plants came online around the world, their discs were often put into artwork that hadn’t been updated.

    I even have some Columbia Japanese pressed discs that came in artwork bearing the legend “Now Made in U.S.A.”

    How do the US Mercury silverface Cd's compare to Anthems and WG Atomics?

    Most of the silverfaces are the same as the Atomics, with two exceptions:

    Rush - Silverface is identical to the Anthem.
    Moving Pictures - Silverface is identical to Anthem VANK 1030 (non-record club edition).

    Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Power Windows were never released as silverfaces, instead continuing to use the Atomic design until the 1997 remasters replaced them. However, there is a later US Atomic Signals that has less bass than the WG and earlier US CD. I think this alternate mastering can be found on clear hub and record club versions.

    I like the HDTracks for FbN (2015 McGee I believe). But I have not specifically listened for the digital watermark on it though. ;)

    Correction...it is the BMG...do you remember the story on that one @Diablo Griffin? I think it is louder than the other pressings (has a few digital clips) but doesn't have any missing parts of songs. At any rate, it sounds good to my ears...

    The US BMG isn't on the chart, so I'm not sure. Do you have the peak values for it?

    Building up my Rush CD collection to augment my vinyl Rush albums. So far I’ve collected:

    * 2112, Mercury USA by PDO, 822 545-2 03%
    * A Farewell to Kings, Mercury USA by PDO, 822 546-2 02@
    * Permanent Waves, Mercury USA, 822 548-2 01!
    * Moving Pictures, Mercury USA, 800482 03@

    Looks like I have some work to do!

    The Atomic Mercuries can be good. Look for a cheap early Anthem sometime though. Depending on the album, you night be surprised. :)
