Post your fun little trivia concerning the genius that is Peter Gabriel Who opens their first solo album with a song about a medieval plague?
There's a lot of live PG coming on vinyl later this year: https://store.realworld.co.uk/produ.../live-lps-bundle-shipping-from-late-november/
He joined his former band mates in Genesis on stage to perform an encore of I Know What I Like at Madison Square Garden in July 1978 in exchange for having his plan ticket upgraded to first class.
Wish it was something from the vault, but I might be into a couple of these. They'll have to do some editing, I think. I remember Growing Up Live has a disproportionate amount of between-song talking that doesn't really need to be there in an audio-only form, but I'm curious to see how they fit Secret World and Athens on LP's. I can see the tracklisting for Athens in the image, but on my audio rip of the blu-ray, the last 4 tracks run about 32 minutes, so should be interesting. Cant see anything on the image for Secret World, unfortunately.
Really interesting interview about two of the four forthcoming live albums: Peter Walsh on Plays Live & Secret World Live - PeterGabriel.com
the new lp of Secret World will add San Jacinto to the track list. It is also included in all recent Digital versions.
Nice article, thanks Jeff. 'Shabbey Road' Loved his production work on Xymox's 1989 album Twist of Shadows
Right, the digital includes the SW Live EP companion disc. I think the 2x12 just carry's the old 2 disc tracklist.
I remember the Security tour , seen the show in Toronto , the sound was absolutely amazing , best i had ever heard up to then . i had perfect seats for sound that night
Ya know, for a more accurate PG experience, I think we should hold back each post in the thread for about five years apart... Oh! and, imagine each post being spoken in a raspy, old-man voice.
I found it interesting that running order of Plays Live doesn’t match actual setlists for Security tour. Presumably rejiggered for vinyl format? Most puzzling is omission of “Lay Your Hands On Me”, likely performed at every gig and even featured on Plays Live album art.
Possibly. Lay Your Hands is in my top 5 tunes by him so it was a disappointment it not being on Plays Live. While I enjoy Fishing Net, it could of easily have been swapped out. LP 1 runs just over 43 minutes LP 2 at over 46, so we're pushing the limits. Thank God at least Not One of Us wasn't axed. Interesting the dual use of digital and analog recording used for it!
He sang his own name and remarked upon doing so mid song when he covered Vampire Weekend's "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" with Hot Chip.
To the uninitiated, Plays Live has some real gems... "On The Air" flat out rocks as Tony Levin soars "Humdrum" is uniquely and exquisitely engaging "I Go Swimming" was PG's fun rocker long before "Solsbury Hill" took that mantle. "Family Snapshot" is more powerful here live than its terrific recorded version from PG3. "DIY" much more compelling and engaging than its recorded version from PG2 "The Family And The Fishing Net" is a treat. Sure to bore some due to its length and pace. It however is an atmospheric/esoteric track for those who appreciate Gabriel's psychological individuality. Yeah there are some clunkers or, to be fair, some songs that weren't captured live all that well. "Shock The Monkey" has no shock here. "I have The Touch" sounds weak and uninspired. "Biko", while inspiring to have seen performed live, definitely gets tedious sounding as it winds down here on record. Overall, its great that this early period is getting a new lease on life again.
What happened to the US release of Live in Athens LP? Did you get it yet @c-eling ? I noticed on FB yesterday that SW Live is now out and already in stock at Bull Moose.
Back ordered on Amazon for another 1 to 2 months. Good Grief Jeff. I'll probably just grab the digital from bandcamp I've been pretty disappointed with new stuff on vinyl this past month. Cost just hasn't been worth it.
More pandemic fun I guess. Which is frustrating because like many on this forum, music is my primary coping strategy for all this stress and isolation. Has anyone compared the digital from band camp versus the 2012 CDs from So box? Is mastering improved?
I hear ya! Mastering, I think it's same iirc. Not sure though. I don't have that 2012 and for 10 bucks on BC I'm just after the tunes Past few weeks I've been trying to fill in New Order and Erasure discography holes to help keep my sanity in check during this crap. I'm actually thinking this is more stressful
Not improved at all, unfortunately. I was going to post "stick with the LP when it comes out because the download is going to be worse"
I agree with nearly everything you said, except for I Have The Touch. In fact i like it better than the studio version because it's less mechanical here on Plays Live, the real drums add that bit of humanity that is missing on Security. I like the added keyboards and vocal parts as well, but those ones are based on the single version. In my opinion, the absolute highlights are Humdrum (wonderful rendition), Family Snapshot, No Self Control and San Jacinto. Biko and Shock The Monkey are absolutely the weakest links.
