I think 1995 was the best year for films, at least in the volume of quality films released that year - so many great films and all very original. Pick your top 3. This will be tough. I wish the poll didn’t limit the number of films, as there are so many that should be on the poll list that I couldn’t add due to the restrictions. I’m guessing the “other” category will be large. Some of them include:

    Before Sunrise
    Rob Roy
    Mighty Aphrodite
    Sabrina
    Dolores Claiborne
    Clockers
    Sense & Sensibility
    Batman Forever
    Waterworld
    Billy Madison
    Casper
    Just Cause
    Heavyweights
    Brady Bunch Movie
    Father of the Bride 2
    Brother’s McMullen
    Cry the Beloved Country
    Empire Records
    Bad Boys
    Houseguest
    French Kiss
    The Net
    Nine Months
    Now and Then

I don't know about it being the best year, but it was certainly a great year for movies. To be fair I was 7-8 years old in 1995, so my tastes from that year tend to be more towards the kid's movies lol.

    I picked:
    Toy Story
    Apollo 13
    Other--Casper

    Nice Idea OP. :righton:
Hmmm...Had to vote other - '96 preferred year in movies, for me, but '95 a good runner-up. I could easily come up w/more, just none of my choices on list. Have probably viewed these around 5 xs; possibly more.

The Net - Action Thriller. Sandra Bullock, Jeremy Northem, Dennis Miller. Directors: Irwin & Charles Winkler
Empire Records - Comedy Drama, which revolves around employees' lives in an indie record shop & possibility of take-over by a chain. Anthony LaPlagia, Liv tyler, Robin Tunney, Renee Zellweger, Ethan Embry. Director: Allan Moyle.
Nick Of Time - Action Thriller. Johnny Depp, Christopher Walken, Roma Maffia, Charles S. Dutton, Marsha Mason, Gloria Reuben. Director: John Badham. Had taken this one out some weeks back to view & never did. Maybe later or tomorrow!

"Se7en" is maybe my favorite movie of the decade, so that's an easy choice.

I'm a little burned out on it now, but "Toy Story" is a true classic.

3rd place was a tough decision, but went "Usual Suspects".

    Other contenders for 3rd place:

    "Apollo 13"
    "GoldenEye"

Lotsa really good movies on that list! 1995 was a strong year at the movies!

"Casper" was an enormously pleasant surprise! I expected an idiotic kiddie movie but it had real heart behind it.

Or that's how I remember it. I actually bought the Blu-ray a few years back but have yet to watch it. I'm kinda afraid it won't live up to my memories of it! :help:

When I reviewed "The Net" on DVD in 2002, I went into it with the memory that the movie stunk, but I liked that screening 18 years ago.

Apparently I didn't like it enough for that positive impression to stick, though. When I saw these pro-"Net" remarks, I thought "those dudes are on crack - that movie's awful!"

Until I revisited my review and realized I liked it! :help:

It is definitely dated with the computer technology but I think if you can get passed that, otherwise, it is a solid film. It is a big part of the movie though.

Since I last viewed it in 2002, the tech wasn't that dated at the time! :)

I'd watch "Net" again if I could get the Blu-ray!

    Nope, sorry! ;)

    Heat
    Leaving Las Vegas
    While You Sleeping

I’m not usually a big romcom fan, but While You Were Sleeping is my favorite of the 90s. Leaving Las Vegas was not favorite in 1995 when I saw it in the theatre - I liked it but I was a bit too young And naive to really Understand the depth of the characters and the beauty in that type of storytelling. Since fitting rock bottom on many different levels since then, I have connected with it and really get it, even on a more visceral level. It film sucked me in. Heat has always been one of my favorites and still holds up after all these years. It is was of those classic films for me that I can watch no matter what mood I’m in.

close runner ups would be Braveheart, then Get Shorty
I have fond memories of that year. Being in high school, I worked at a video rental store and my brother worked at the theater. Movies were my life that brief period

You need to change your name, traitor! :D

Seriously - like the first 5 or 6 times I saw you here, I thought "hey - big Fincher fan on the SHF!" It took a while to absorb that you use an "S" instead of an "N"!

@David Fischer - D'ya know I went to look @ '96 & I may be mistaken, after all; that it's '95 that's my favorite year, w/'96 being runner-up. I'm prepared to call those 2 years a draw! Another '95 favorite of mine is the silly, hysterical comedy "Houseguest" w/Phil Hartman (R.I.P.) :sigh::shake::( & Sinbad.

From the poll, I chose Se7en, Desperado, and The Usual Suspects.

'95 also had a few horror flicks I dig: The Prophecy, Lord of Illusions and In the Mouth of Madness.

Houseguest is a good one... filmed in my hometown as well. These types of movies were pretty unique to the 90s

  20. Toy Story
    Heat
    12 Monkeys

    4th & 5th would be
    Get Shorty
    Apollo 13

1995 had a lot of good films but a load of crappy ones as well.

goldeneye and Ghost in the Shell were also top notch.

Leaving Las Vegas is a terrific movie and I never need to see it again.

    The Usual Suspects
    Seven
Other - City of Lost Children

with Toy Story and Dolores Claiborne right on their tail.

It's funny, I have all of these on laserdisc and probably haven't watched any of these in nearly 20 years as my DVD / BD collection grew. Still damn fine movies that I now have an excuse to revisit.

I agree - nothing wrong with '95, but for me it's '94 - Natural Born Killers, Heavenly Creatures, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Clerks, Crumb, Four Weddings and A Funeral, The Professional, The Crow, and the Oscar winning Forrest Gump.

Get Shorty, The Usual Suspects and Desperado from the list, with maybe The American President in 4th place. Off the list, Empire Records or French Kiss could easily slide onto my top 5.
