I spent a few years working at a small TV station. It was the best job I ever had and I can say that UHF is closer to reality than some may realize.

Does anybody from Atlanta remember the wacky stuff Ted Turner's Channel 17 put on the air to keep it going until it became the "superstation"? James Brown as a local dance party host? Come on...! I was doing my college internship in Summer of 1978 at a local teevee station in my home town, when one of the engineers came back from vacation with tapes of some of the nuttiness that was going on down there. They produced something I believe was called "The 9 O'Clock News" - which ran at 4am - and I believe Bill Tush ran it. Would love to hear from anybody who actually saw it (and, what were you doing up at that time of day, considering you probably didn't have a VCR at that point...?).

It's SO unbelievably corny, but the scene where George is doing the Geraldo rip-off and he's interviewing Satan, and Satan is trying to explain himself and George says, "Oh, just shut up!" cracks me up every time. Actually if I remember correctly, many of the jokes that hit home with me the most in this movie are the ones that are so mind-numbingly obvious that they'd be idiotic in any other context. Only Weird Al can be that naive and get away with it.

    Oh, and Stanley Spadowski>Kramer.

I rather fondly recall watching the last vestiges of that early TBS era manifested in The Bill (Tush) Show from 1980, with Larry Larson, Jan Hooks and others.

I also have, of all things, the TBS Newswatch theme "boint" permanently into memory! I can't seem to remember things like college courses, my own phone number or even what I ate for supper last night, but I got this forever:

This is my new mop. George, my friend, he gave me this mop. This is a pretty good mop. It's not as good as my first mop. I miss my first mop, but this is still a good mop. Sometimes you just hafta take what life gives ya, 'cause life is like a mop and sometimes life gets full of dirt and crud and bugs and hairballs and stuff… you, you, you gotta clean it out. You, you, you gotta put it in here and rinse it off and start all over again and, and sometimes, sometimes life sticks to the floor so bad you know a mop, a mop, it's not good enough, it's not good enough. You, you gotta get down there, like, with a toothbrush, you know, and you gotta, you gotta really scrub 'cause you gotta get it off. You gotta really try to get it off. But if that doesn't work, that doesn't work, you can't give up. You gotta, you gotta stand right up. You, you gotta run to a window and say, "Hey! These floors are dirty as hell, and I'm not gonna take it any more!"

I'm not saying that it's the best movie ever, but it's telling that Silver Linings Playbook is an expensive, star-studded remake.

Saw this in the theatre, but it once it came out on VHS, and then again on DVD. All-timer, for me. For my better half, not so much.

I can still recite, maybe, 90% of the dialogue and reference lines/scenes probably once a week at minimum.

I have always found this scene oddly inspiring. For all its goofiness there's some heart behind UHF that makes it work.
