If you only know Rossini from his operas, and you want to explore more, this is a good place to start:
Errr ... Melisande wandering in the woods - or something ... I think the only criteria used in the design of many classical record covers was - cheap. Preferably free. And why some artists agreed to the frankly awful photos of them that ended up on covers...
Looks like an interesting release. Can't find it on Amazon though. Is this one of those "so out of print that it's in the memory hole" Sony releases or is it just listed in an idiosyncratic way devised to avoid a manual search?
Thanks! Not sure how it wasn't coming up when I searched by the performers' names and the title "Elements." The Bezos is not with me today, apparently!
Download at Prestoclassical if you dont care about physical media. Also +1. Nice recording. Most of Hille Perl's stuff is pretty good
First listen to new arrival "Polyphonie Aquitaine Du XII Siecle" performed by Ensemble Organum directed by Marcel Peres on Harmonia Mundi France.
Boy, they make this music sound entirely new. In the Poulenc, it was like listening to another language, but one related, or to a dialect--that feeling of not understanding but being able to pick up phrases here and there. Momentary flashes of recognition, but otherwise new and different. Not for the traditionalist, perhaps, but very interesting. I'm used to this recording of the Poulenc.
Amazon search engine is pretty lousy compared with the Google search engine ... I have had such experience many times.
OOPS !!! Sorry chaps, my Mahler/Wit picture above should have been........ But rest assured, the Resurrection/Wit disc is in my 'shopping basket' !!!
Recorded 3/24-25/80, Sofiensaal, Vienna. Producer: James Mallinson. Engineer: James Lock. Issued 8/83. Stirring 20th Century music well-played & recorded. Mastered by Decca in the UK & pressed in Holland by Polygram.
I liked the Qobuz files enough to buy the hi-res FLAC version (24/96) and took advantage of Presto Classical's 50% off all Naxos recordings today. I started with Smith's recital and just finished the Kernis. Rouse will be up later.
Spinning in the CD player. Some excellent music here. I wonder how many of them and which ones will become part of the standard recital encore repertoire? First listen. Thanks again to whoever it was that reminded me the other day that I wanted this.
Thanks for the reminder! Gotta see it! This one I guess(?) Same here, although in my case these were probably late 80's. BTW isn't it amazing how Gould has become a household name.? I know so many people who aren't particularly interested in classical but they have this album. I actually reach mainly for his Bach from time to time, more rarely listen to him playing other composers. Will OTOH play this version (16-44).
