    Where did you read that?

  2. I enjoyed it as well, and I’m generally no fan of musicals. It gets a lot of stick because few critics want to give Madonna any credit.

I had my "music brother" call me for the first time in months this morning, and we were talking about "The Wall" (I don't like it, he does), and then hours later he passes away...

    2020 SUCKS!

Because so many of them do. They’re not punching the clock and counting down the days at the factory.

It doesn’t surprise me he wasn’t working up to the last minute (he was said to have had a “long illness”) but he was 59 when he made his last movie, I can’t think of too many directors who hung it up at that age.

I've heard it said he could no longer get any studios interested in the kinds of films he wanted to make.

Sad news. Seeing Midnight Express, Fame and Pink Floyd: The Wall were three of the most intense cinematic experiences of my young life.

Massive loss, The Wall, The Commitments, Bugsy, Fame, Evita, he knew how to make musicals and music itself work on screen despite how poor the material might have been. Great character and a normal bloke, RIP

Yeah, I think you're on to something. I'm not sure if Evita is a great film, but it's beautifully shot, with terrific set pieces.

Good DP and production designer then.

Chris DeVoe RIP Vickie Mapes Williams (aka Equipoise)

Birdy was an amazing film. He was one of those directors who was guided by the material rather than imposing a personal style on it - I'm not surprised he was no fan of Peter Greenaway, who is all style without substance.

    RIP.

The Commitments in particular was a big thing in Ireland. A film set in Dublin was a bit of a rarity. Still is I suppose. I still love it.
It made me realize how great soul music was.

    RIP

You’re not alone in being turned on to soul with the film.

Showed the film to our 13yo son a month or two back; he roared, and the film has held up incredibly well.
