The thing with Roy Orbison is he trumped everyone else in the group, he wasn't a contemporary, and to me it was an "wow factor" that Roy Orbison was actually in this group that made the TW so original. I think putting Del Shannon in would have produced awesome results, but nothing like RO's involvement did. I think if they were going to put one man in that could still "trump" the others, that wasn't a contemporary, that was an influence on all of them and could adapt and perform songs that still kept the integrity of their own music it would have been Carl Perkins.

Well, not sure on details but he (Shannon) was their choice to replace Roy, something happened, it didn't come to pass and he committed suicide shortly afterwards. Don't know how, if at all, the situations were related.

  7. Yes, Orbison brought the magic of his voice Plus Harrison and Dylan looked up to him in the way Petty and Lynne looked up to Dylan and Harrison.

Others that have historical weight, but would have upset the predominantly white male club:

    Little Richard
    Bo Diddley
    Brenda Lee
    Wanda Jackson

For some reason Aaron Neville comes to mind. Maybe it's his high pitched voice, or maybe the way Dylan talked about him in his autobiography. He would be a pretty good fit, although granted his musical style is pretty different, but that voice is something else.

Why not Cpt. Beefheart or Lemmy? Or Michael Jackson? Or Dave Grohl?

Carl Perkins would have been great.

Off Topic, but maybe there should be a Wilbury's reboot. I'm just spit balling: David Byrne, Bono, Morrissey, Andy Partridge, and Micky Dolenz. I guess I should leave. :hide:

Q: Did you ever give serious thought to replacing Roy after he passed away?

    Petty: No.

Lynne: No, we didn't, because we were a tightknit unit by then. Even though it was rumored by then that lots of people, including Del Shannon whom Tom and myself were great pals with as well, could eventually have been in, it was never thought of. Because when Roy was gone, it just left us as more of a unit, the four of us. We never felt like we needed anybody else.

For their little LA circle at the time, I think Del Shannon (had he lived long enough), Roger McGuinn, or Ringo.

It wouldn't have worked -- not in a million years -- but the thought of bringing in Scott Walker is sort of amusing me at the moment. He's about the closest I can think of to the uniqueness of Roy's voice, not that he sounds anything like him at all (he doesn't).

I actually think Robert Plant would have had a blast singing Roy's parts, performing in his Honeydrippers voice, but the personalities don't seem like a good mix. Still, that's a fun suggestion.

Other suggestions like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson...well, they would offer gravitas, but Roy's more "angelic" tenor is so key to the distinctive sound of the group. Without a similar voice to replace him, you'd have too many gravelly voices competing for the mic.
