Thematically, it seemed an updated variant on The Coasters' 1957 hit "Searchin'."

Joe Tex references “Skinny Legs And All” during the fade of “Ain’t Gonna Bump”. He shouts out “Hey Leroy! You can have this one too.” This probably meant nada to 99.999999% of the single’s UK buyers, however.

I had a chuckle at your Fleetwood Mac comment as I’ve tried hard but failed to feel any excitement for most of the output of the post-Peter Green version of the band. It’s good to know that I’m not alone. Thank you from the bottom of my hi fi rack.

    Wikipedia entry - also NME #434 (3 weeks - 07 May-21 May 1977) and Melody Maker #376 (1 week - 07 May 1977); its U.S. chart performance was more underwhelming in comparison: Billboard - #25; Cash Box - #21; and Record World - #22.

One of his most famous other hits (besides "Lowdown") in the States, as from his Silk Degrees album; was #11 in US Billboard, #6 in Cash Box, #12 in Record World, and #4 in Radio & Records.

This was the time when Earth, Wind and Fire were reaching the height of their powers. Not only were they producing some classic melodic and rhythmic tracks of their own, they were also backing Deniece Williams and (soon) The Emotions. All topped off with tight musicianship and sky high production values.

    Lovely stuff!

    And now, the other 'newies':

    [IMG] [IMG]
His last U.S. #1, topping Billboard (Hot 100 #428 - 1 week, 25 June 1977), Cash Box and Record World (both 1 week - 18 June 1977); the outlier was Radio & Records, where it could only muster #11 (imagine!).
Reached #15 in US Billboard, #14 in Cash Box, #22 in Record World, and #20 in Radio & Records.
    Yes, Virginia, there was a U.S. release of this . . .

The first time out for this future dance-floor standard; at this juncture, could only eke out peaks of #53 in US Billboard, #70 in Cash Box, and #60 in Record World. Both sides of the pond will hear from this number again.

The week of April 16, 1977, the same 2 artists were at number 1 & 2 in the UK and the US - but in each country with a different song!
In the UK, ABBA were at number one with 'Knowing Me Knowing You' and David Soul was at number 2 with 'Going in with My Eyes Open'. The same week in the US, ABBA were at number one with 'Dancing Queen' and Soul at number 2 with 'Don't Give Up on Us'.

That's right! Shows, in a way, how the U.S. was a step behind the UK in issuing some artists' product as singles.

In The City - Short; sharp; taut; tense; terrific.

It's A Game - BCR's final fab 45 before the inevitable pop abyss.

Disco Inferno - Stomping scorcher. Best ever disco single, IMO.

Got To Give It Up - Paaaarty-central. Great groove.

Free promises much, but in the end gets very insipid. The voice of miss Williams is soothing, but in the end it gets you in the nerves. Let's say it's an incomplete song without any type of chorus.

    2'5/5. It qualifies just.

    New entries...

The Jam - Another of 1977's greatest debuts. Here we find one band that will make much revered songs, and whose style will mark a change in British music. Mods making great rock and roll: very nice. And remember this name: Paul Weller.

Joy Sarney - I have to admit: I can't stand this song. One of the worst "songs" in the history of music. Maybe it's Sarney's poor voice, or that puppet's grating "noise"... but I think if I listen another time, I may kill someone. Why people bought this, is a mystery.

Roni Hill - Two Holland-Dozier-Holland songs by the price of one. What we find here, however, is a weak disco version of those two songs in a medley. Nothing too remarkable, perhaps a bit outdated by 1977 standards, and a small hit in the end.

Yvonne Elliman - Mellow pop-soul by Yvonne, in a very pleasant follow-up to Love Me. One of those mellow songs which was a small hit. Nice to see her in the charts again.

Bay City Rollers - A blatant middle finger to Tam Paton (a real character of a manager, given what happened next), this is the last shout at the Top 20 of a band who were already dying in the US (not in Japan, where they were adored). It's a change of style, being less teenybopper oriented. Sadly, their star was waning...

Heatwave - How you carry on with the success of Boogie Nights? Easy, with another song a bit more heavier than its predecessor. It's very danceable and more palatable than some of those funky singles at the beginning of the year. That certain Rod Temperton was starting to become famous.

Detroit Spinners - What we find here is a budget EP (at 70p!) which includes their (up to this moment) biggest hit and three songs which didn't make the cut in the UK charts: it's soul by number and almost got to the Top 30. The new face of the Spinners will come in a few years time.

Marvin Gaye - Live from London (Los Angeles, in fact)... it's the disco Gaye. Divided into two parts, it's a superb song which is obviously hinted at the disco consumption. The sounds is fantastic, the groove is amazing and the voice of Gaye (I think) is more of a background than the most important thing. The first hit by Gaye in some 4 years and number one in the US, where people danced to that day and night. And somebody was taking notes some 30 odd years... a certain R. Thicke.

Roger Daltrey - Daltrey's solo hits have been quite different from the output he had with The Who: a tale of misery, an orchestra with him and, as this example, a quite soft rock ballad. It borders on pop-rock territory and it's not one of those great efforts he was accustomed to do, hence the low position in the charts.

Bryan Ferry - Sayonara... Ferry's hit was a homage to Japan (the country, not the band) and included everything: the instruments, the Asian rythm and some interjections in Japanese. One of those classy efforts by Ferry in a time where class was being engulfed by disco and punk.

Martyn Ford Orchestra - Written by Lynsey de Paul and Mike Moran (those twist and turns of fate), this is yet another attempt to have British disco in the charts. The start may be some kind of different (perhaps cosmic disco?), but the rest is more of the same mistakes UK disco had: paling in comparison with the American counterpart. Nevertheless, it's a great danceable tune.

Shalamar - It was something new. A medley of various songs became famous in one specific year in the 80s, but there was a predecessor. A band whose success was to be in the 80s decided to release a Motown medley with the great songs of the 60s in funky-disco version. It's OK, but nothing too brilliant.

Tina Charles - If Tina's 1976 was a year of success, 1977 began a bit underwhelmingly. This seems a very lounge-y song which may suite more to Tina's voice, but in the end is very vapid. Pleasant? Maybe. A great hit? Nah, mate.

Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees was becoming a terrific success, and this third single was yet another success. Top 20 for this pop-rock song which includes some synths to give much more of a punch. Great song on a great album.

Trammps - Burn, baby, burn! One of the best disco songs to come out from the US, this is indeed an edit (long intro shortened) from the American hit single. It wasn't a great hit in America until the SNF film, but here it struck because it was one of those incredible disco hits. Great effort!

There wre a few non-hits on ToTP the weeks Deniece was on top. First, Frankie Valli with his new single... Easily is the name, and easily it failed.

(that week also saw the appearance of Mac and Katie Kissoon with Your Love, but no video of such is on the Tube).

The "other" (and half) of the non-charting hits was the b-side of a single which would chart! I won't spoil the a-side, but here's Lights Out by Dr. Feelgood. A sign of times to come.

And here are some of those US charted records from that week two acts had #1 and #2 hits with different songs on each side of the pond, that failed to chart in the UK. First, "So In To You":

#7 in US Billboard, #5 in Cash Box, #8 in Record World, and #4 in Radio & Records.

#5 in US Billboard and Record World, #3 in Cash Box, and #9 in Radio & Records.
