Tough question. I was a teenager and an emerging film geek during the 80's and saw a lot of movies. A lot of forgettable crap, a lot of wonderful foreign films, some movies girlfriends dragged me to, and just about every giant blockbuster released during the era.

Looking back, the ONE film that defines the decade for me is James Cameron's Aliens. I'm not arguing it's the best film of the era, only that it stands out in my memory as the singular movie going experience of the time. To this day, I've never heard a more rousing audience reaction than when Ripley shouts at the Alien Queen "Get away from her, you BITCH!"

The 80’s were an amazing time for film and music. Some good 80’s films:

    The Goonies
    Gremlins
    The Neverending Story
    Karate Kid
    First Blood
    The Empire Strikes Back
    The Return Of The Jedi
    Terminator
    Can’t Buy Me Love
    WarGames
    Back To The Future
    Ghostbusters

I can go on forever! Such an inspiring decade. I am glad I was there to experience it!

Cambodia! Damn, the Killing Fields from 1984. That was a great movie, one that I always recommend to people. You just reminded me of it when I saw your title, which I've never seen by the way.

It's a wonderfully hopeless movie that ends like Vanishing Point or Easy Rider. It's just a crackerjack movie, and both William Petersen and Willem Dafoe are outstanding.

Chariots of Fire, 1981, was an example of an inspirational film that seems a rare commodity these days. The Mission, 1986, was another one.

No mention yet (I think) of Missing 1982 Costa Gavras.

This thread must assume I had only ten years, to see just a couple of good films.

Admittedly, the Philco was out a lot during the decade, tubes were hard to come by in rural Indiana...
