RIP Wilford Brimley

Can't forget his comforting line to the grandchild character: "We won't ever get old, and we won't ever die.". Well, he can live forever in my memory, far as I'm concerned.

Might want to watch Steven Colbert tomorrow night...he might have some nice words to say about the man who used to call him up and give him crap on The Colbert Report for years.

 

Which was ironic as he looked like he did get old when he made that movie. It is like a ‘Reverse of The Irishman’ where they put an old De Niro, Pacino and Pesci in the movie, but Scorsese made them look 48(which worked until those Actors had to move their bodies). So in Cocoon, Brimley as a 49 year old was made to look 80. Special Effects must have been good back in the ‘80s.

He should have added in the movie line you quoted, “and we will never get that Diabeaters”.

On a serious note, who is going to now tell us to eat Oatmeal because it is a healthy breakfast? Martin Sheen?

You know, it’s funny that you mentioned that because I thought the same thing.

 

My HS buddy Bob by the time he was 22 looked like he was 45 with the bushy ‘stach, thinning hair, hunky dory mannerism, a much heavier version of Ned Flanders. It wasn’t because of hard living or hard drinking. His idea of excitement was wearing sandals sock less. By the time he turned 40’ish his appearance started to match his actual age. Once he was over the hurdle he began to look younger than the now 55 year old man. The guy started at 45 and stayed there.

 

Funny you should ask me that; I've been starting my mornings with a pouch of Quaker's Instant, two pinches of Quaker Quick Oats, and a pinch of granola plus half a banana ever since I came home from the hospital last February. And I did it for my health (plus Covid-shopping made it smart), with nary an ironic thought to their mustachio'd spokesperson.

One of those guys who looked old even when he was relatively young.

 

Such a shame, he was always hugely enjoyable in every film he was in. RIP.

(And I'm trying not to focus on the fact that he was the same age I am now when he made The Thing.)

Ebert used to say that no film with M. Emmet Walsh in the cast could really be considered a wholly "bad" film. The same could probably be said of any Wilford Brimley film. RIP.

 

You can say I "barley" made it out.

Kind of a weird dude in some respects. I mean, he was for a bill that was for cock fighting in California (I think?). Something about his offspring needed to make a living? Cock fighting?

Anyway, a wide and varied career. Stay hard, Wilford.

 

He lived here in my city. I’ve met him.
