Lately I'm in the mood for some dirty, raw, Sabbathy stuff... I don't know much about stoner bands but I guess that's were I can find what I'm looking for!
Everyone else can give you the usual candidates so I'll recommend a band called Test. They were a Polish hard rock band of the 70s. If the language barrier doesn't bother you, you'll hear some truly awesome "stoner rock." http://www.polishmusic.ca/skok/cds/polskie/grupy/t/test/test.html
Two words: Fu Manchu. Quote from AMG: "Punk energy, classic rock drive, psychedelic crunch, and heavy-*** grind all at once — really, is anything more needed?"
What's stoner rock? Is it supposed to be slow sludgy and Sabbathy? I've heard the term before and I'm not too clear on it. Having said that I'll recommend The Gathering's "Mandylion" and "Nighttime Birds" as well as the band Trouble.
the distinctions are a bit blurry when talking about subgenres like "stoner rock," "sludge," "doom metal" and so on. but the Stooges, the Gathering are definitely not what is meant by any of those terms. the basic templates for stoner rock are Sabbath's Master of Reality and Vol. 4, so "slow sludgy and sabbathy" is right on the mark. the wikipedia entry is bare bones and rather poorly written but it'll give you some idea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoner_rock
Monster Magnet - Dopes To Infinity - the ultimate stoner rock album. I also like Trouble - Manic Frustration, it is considered a classic. It's oop, you might be able to get on cheaper on Ebay than the half.com listings. http://product.half.ebay.com/_W0QQcpidZ1773623QQprZ3141133 Clutch is also a very good band. I'm not familiar with their entire catalog, but I am partial to "The Elephant Riders".
I used to play Grand Funk (the red cover) by Grand Funk Railroad and Sabbath's first album back to back. Especially loved Inside Looking Out.........and still do.
The first few Grand Funk Railroad albums worked for me in the late 60's and early 70's, though I'm a bit embarassed to mention it now.
Please read the wikipedia definition of stoner rock. Lots of the recommendations being posted are not even arguably stoner rock. Or you can poke around stonerrock.com.
