Lacquer cut by JJ Golden. Originally I thought John Golden then went back and realized that it was a JJ Golden, John’s son. Didn’t know he had a son in the business. Hope he’s as good as his father.
Got mine and wasn't thrilled. SQ is good and pressing quality is excellent. The drummer ruins the show by doing a number of off-beat fills like he's playing prog-rock. Also beats his drums too loudly in a bunch of songs. That part was disappointing. Nice B3 organ playing. That was nice. There are thankfully a few songs where the drummer cools it a bit but it would've been nice had that band brought onboard a blues drummer instead.
They can't all be homeruns but I appreciated the deal regardless. Just too bad about that damn drummer.
He’s probably dead by now. Meanwhile, here in Miami, I’m still waiting for mine. The mail has been painfully slow during this pandemic.

In an interview when it came out, Jon Landau explained that it was an attempt to demonstrate how artists could get better compensated for their hard work. In one of his Volume shows, Dave Marsh also praised the new 2LP format, saying that traditionally racism has lead to R&B and soul records being issued as single LPs, at a single LP price. By forcing labels to use a 2LP format, they would raise the retail price and better compensate minority artists.
Wow. That’s insane. I don’t doubt that artists (even millionaire artists) deserve to be better compensated, but artificially “expanding” an album into a 2-LP set to boost their income doesn’t generate more money from the labels; it generates more money from the consumer, who has to pay extra for the “privilege“ of getting up to flip the record after every three songs. It’s a borderline scam, like these food products that are sold in packaging that’s largely empty in order to make the consumer think they’re actually getting more product.
My thoughts too when I read this. It transfers money from the consumer to everybody else in the chain, not just the artist. Landau explaining this as benevolence is laughable.
It assumes inelastic demand, which I suppose there is to some extent with music. But it's assuredly not entirely inelastic.
Bruce addressed all of this supply and demand mumbo jumbo with his second album, The Wild, The Inelastic & The E-Street Shuffle.
In Hail Hail Rock & Roll I still remember Chuck Berry talking about records selling for 99 cents and the customary compensation for the artist was 1 cent per record. He simply asked, "What I want to know is where did the other 98 cents go?"
