I highly recommend any buyers and sellers on Discogs should definitely read this thread on the changes coming to Discogs for October 1st. I suspect I will no longer be able to sell there.

Most people would have missed this because no one is contacting sellers to let them know what's coming. If I hadn't been searching shipping options I would have missed it too and my items would have no longer been seen by anyone due to Discogs new rules by Oct. 1st.

What specifically is the difficulty with the new policy. Read the first post, but the link though, and don’t see an obvious non-starter for me.

There are plusses and minuses to both the current system and the upcoming change.

what it means for me is that i will basically not be able to ship internationally. there's just no way i'm going to take the time to keep tabs on the different pricing for hundreds of countries/regions and manually update. it's already a challenge due to sky-high costs of reliable international service.

i remember back in the day when ebay actually updated their system to figure this out automatically for the seller. if discogs were serious about making things better, maybe they'd invest in that too.

It's very USA centric in its thought and approach is all. As far as Canada is concerned, if you haven't figured out I'm a Canadian yet, we are screwed. There is a multitude of shipping options even within our own country and the tracking options are very expensive and will dissuade purchases most certainly. An example... oh, you do need tracked shipment to to CA in the USA for one CD. At the least costly option your cost is $15 US.

It's not like here on the Forums where I can use non-tracked shipping for around $8.75 because I know most people are trustworthy. So ends my time of inexpensive CD selling on Discogs. Sigh

Just remember though discogs is a database!! .......pay no mind to their commercial sales side of it, don't look behind that curtain. They have favored large Sellers from the beginning and always will so you little guys are just shiit out of luck

Yes, but at least we little sellers could discuss shipping options with buyers before the purchase agreement. Based on that I was able to sell a lot without the absurd tracked shipping costs up here in Canada. Fortunately it worked out every time with honest buyers. Heh, maybe I should change my Discogs user name to S.O.L. :D

Yeah there's been discussions by Canadian sellers in the Marketplace forum about this.

It's going to kill Canadian sellers ability to sell on there as it would be impossible to set rates to deal with the different locations a buyer might be located in.

eBay's postage calculator system integrates with Canada post so all a buyer needs to do is enter his postal code and a rate will come up. Sellers can even elect to offer multiple shipping options.

So far Discogs has not made an indication their shipping section will be that complex.

Canadian sellers would have to set a flat rate and hope for the best that it all evens out of the long term; some times they lose, sometimes they will win. But then you'll have the problem of buyers complaining they were charged $X when it actually cost less....

So, now Discogs has joined the hungry hungry hippos herd, insisting you agree to a bunch of cookie and Google-powered snoopage before you just precede to their site. I can't even figure out what the least amount of intrusion I can select just to look at the opening screen. But I imagine even the least possible is more than I am willing to grant them.

    Gonna miss Discogs.

So what's the problem, specifically? That you need to list shipping costs to other countries?

That's fine. If you want to ship to other countries, list a cost that is sure to cover your costs. Assume a single CD will weigh 8 oz (it won't, but that works), a double is 12oz, etc. A vinyl record is 2 lbs. Box sets you need to weight.

Then go to the USPS and find the foreign shipping costs and pick the country group with the highest cost and use that.

If you want, you can put in your policies that you'll refund excess postage, if any. Or don't.

USPS: CD overseas: $14, LP: $24. Works every single time.

It's not just about shipping from what I've read. My understanding is that from Oct sales will be PayPal only. Sellers will no longer be invoiced by Discogs for fees and taxes, these will be taken (split by PayPal) at point of sale.

That's GREAT. I hate having to pay, by hand, a Discogs invoice at the end of the month. I'll be happy to have Discogs take their cut at the time of payment. Yah-hoo!

Well, to the honest people. I get CD's wrapped in cardboard around $14 sent overseas for decades. LP's $24.

These changes are unacceptable. I'll be leaving Discogs in a month's time. Hopefully a better platform will surface.

Don't ever ship a CD from Maine to Australia then or you're gonna lose some money. :)

Discogs' plan is to make PayPal automatically charge sellers for Discogs fees and sales tax when they receive payment for an order. However, in the Netherlands private citizens are free to sell each other second hand goods like CDs and LPs tax free. I am currently confused whether or not Discogs realises this. They certainly don't care. In a worst case scenario I would be forced to pay a substantial sales tax as if I am a registered business where none is legally due! Who are PayPal going to forward the proceeds from this extortionary racket?

PayPal are the scum of the earth. If you've never been screwed over by them for no fault of your own consider yourself lucky.

It was that much of a hassle? Took me all of 20 secs to do it each time. Not a big deal and certainly not worthy of excitement on my end.

Taxes are only applied if buying from a US seller.

Last week I sold 17 CDs to a buyer from New York City and a large New York sales tax (about €25) was added to the order. Under the current system the buyer sent me the money for the CDs, shipping and sales tax and I will forward Discogs the NY sales tax when my monthly fees are due around 10 September.

As an EU citizen I have never been charged US sales taxes when ordering from a US seller. (Including from the buyer from last week who is a musician/seller himself.)
