I was playing Venus And Mars while flipping through the book that came with the remaster. There are some atmospheric black and white pictures of the band in the studio performing with a host of great musicians. It struck me that these images reflected the sounds on the record and should have been centre stage in the album artwork. They'd have made a better cover than the rather bloated artwork Paul went with. It's mostly a funky LP and shots of the band in a desert don't capture the excitement of making music in a sweaty New Orleans studio. Just an idle thought. Anyone agree with me?

I've always wondered why Live albums don't have a live shot on the cover. Seems like a missed opportunity.

Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl is a perfect example.

P.S. For whatever reason, Venus & Mars album cover doesn't seem to bother me.

To be honest, I can't think of too many really great McCartney, or for that matter, any Beatle solo album covers when you compare them to so many great Beatles covers. All Things Must Pass was pretty cool in its stark bleakness and as a box package, and even POB was good in the beauty of its quiet peaceful simplicity. But not great, and other than that, nothing else stands out offhand.

More appropriate for an album called "Venus and Mars" than a shot of Venus and Mars?

Oh man, if we're talkin' albums that need a new cover, everything bows before Pet Sounds. :help:

I think the Venus and Mars cover is absolutely great and so did others...
The L.P. comes in an award winning sleeve, being voted the "Album Cover of the Year" by the music industry trade magazine, "Music Week". It is a gatefold sleeve designed by Hipgnosis and George Hardie.

I always thought that the total package with the stickers and posters was great:

Great album cover. No problem with this one at all. A nice package all round. Of all of Paul's album covers post Beatles, this is in my top 5.

That would have made a better cover.

While you're at it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how much more appropriate the White Album cover should have been...

Ringo and George's headshots should have switched places, perhaps? Or "The Beatles" should have instead been printed in braille...?

Agreed. This was one of my first albums, bequeathed to me in 1975 by my brother, who might have lifted it from a K-Mart, and it felt like the horn of plenty!

I really have to agree with that, big time. I do like the cover of Ram for it's sort of primitive look and I agree on both POB and ATMP...but beyond that, the artwork for the ex-Beatle album covers leaves a bit to be desired (the "Ringo' album was quite nice but it would have been even nicer if , for the back cover, they replicated the front cover with photo cardboard cutouts al la Pepper of all the "characters").

I participate in the McCartney song-by-song thread and actively bitch about his bad album covers. Some of them are just awful. His former band mates covers are equally crappy for the most part.

  23. I always thought of this album as kind of iconic.

This record was always so hard to find even though it had a number one song on it. I had to special order it three times at Record Bar because it was always out of stock.
