jumping in here (i need to read some more of this long thread!) I liked 'rainy day' more then i thought i would, after feeling like the five or six ones before that (except blue jasmine.. basically everything after the great 'midnight in paris') were kind of substandard woody. 'rainy day' has an energy and i found timothee chalemet to be engaging in it (truth is, i've thought he was fairly good in everythign i've seen him in. seems to be a lot of hate towards him, not sure why- i found him to be a lot more believable and engaging then some of the other leads in other recent woody films.) wonder if rivkin's festival will ever be distributed here in the states. (seeing 'rainy day' was not easy). i somehow have a good feeling about rivkin...
Hi there and great post! I too have high hopes for Rifkin's Festival...and I agree with a lot of your post. It sounds like I enjoyed Magic in the Moonlight and Irrational Man more than you perhaps, and there are folks on here that have a lot of affection for Wonder Wheel. I seem to enjoy his recent work (last four projects or so) almost on a scene by scene basis, with some scenes (like the prostitute scene in Cafe Society) just being kind of awkward/awful. For me, Rainy Day in New York had more things that I liked than I disliked, though I do need to watch it again. Anyway, welcome!
Does a (lackluster) poster count? Note: I stopped getting updates about new posts for this thread, but am pleased to see some recent activity!
I sure wish I could find the soundtrack to 'Play it Again Sam' on any format except vinyl. I've looked for a vinyl rip with no success. Help!
The poster doesn’t bother me greatly. Yes, it’s highly stylised, but I quite like the retro-cartoonish quality. It reminds me a little of the poster for Alex Ross Perry’s Listen Up Philip:
There definitely is a similarity! I don’t hate the new one but, depending on how much of the thread you’ve read, you’ll see I take a big interest in the posters. I’ve purchased and framed quite a few of them! This one won’t be in that category.
While I was being a little silly before, I legitimately don't know how I feel about the poster. I'm sure that it will grow on me.
I watched Rainy Day last night and enjoyed it but oh, for the days of a younger Ed Norton or John Cusack or Tobey Maguire...
I quite enjoyed the film, even with the ex-hooker ex machina. It's a New York as we'd all like to imagine. Unless you're Martin Scorsese.
I found the “wit” severely lacking in that film. The dialogue between Timotheeee and Selena was mostly sub-mental, as our OP might say.
I'm really interested to see how an actor who is also a great writer (Wallace Shawn) does in a Woody Allen movie where he apparently has a leading role. If Woody is as open to actors tweaking his dialogue as he says, the wit factor may be quite high on this one. Wow, now I'm kind of itching to see Rifkin's Festival.
Big fan of Wallace Shawn here. Rifkin’s Festival is, of course, his sixth film for Allen, and what looks to be his biggest role yet. “Beware, evildoers, wherever you are!”
