It was the 'Ripper' albums that finished me off too.
I think you're right about the uncredited inputs on the albums you mentioned.

Yeah, I think JSS(& actually ALL of YMs former frontmen)have been screwed over by him credit/$$$ wise.

The last 3 times I've seen him(which was a few years ago), he had other guys playing with him. But it was mostly him noodling on the guitar, I didn't mind that.

Check out Talisman, the band he did albums with (got all of them). Excellent hard rock songs, fantastic musicianship and amazing bass playing!

Malmsteen was a talented guitarist.... at some point* he lost the direction.

    * After the first album ;)

I don't get this at all...maybe on his later albums you could point to a song like Teaser and say that...but on Marching Out? I mean, it's really the birth of neo-classical metal and power metal.

That said I'd say his run from Marching Out through Fire & Ice is pretty remarkable.

I'd say if you don't own the original pressings it's a good economic way to get these album and it sounds good enough.

And can I point out the Yngwie did one of my all time favorite cover songs?

    ABBA's Gimme Gimme Gimme

I like the two albums with Ripper even though they sound like they were mixed and mastered by a blind monkey.
That was also the last time I saw Yngwie live was on tour with him.

Damn, that makes the keys in ABBA soulless shredding :)

Agreed. This was a great patch of records for Malmsteen. For a newcomer, it’s a fantastic purchase.

I actually had not seen that video clip before, but it's quite funny. I guess great minds think alike?

  17. There must be a law that every Swedish heavy rock/metal/punk act eventually has to cover an Abba song.

The best song he ever recorded IMO

Malmsteen biggest problem? He can't work with singers! And he does not have the repertoire to fill an album with instrumentals, like Jeff Beck or Joe Satriani.

Alcatrazz - Kree Nakoorie and Suffer Me are the stand out Yngwie tracks for me. If I really want to listen to that classical Euro metal sound though I prefer Schenker or Uli.

Sorry man...I'd rate Odyssey in the top 10 greatest heavy metal albums of all time and think that every self respecting headbanger should have it in their collection.

So your 2020 verdict is the same as the one I had when the album came out :)

Good job! I also had the album, but I couldn't hear any longer to this cheesy Melodic Power Metal.

This song sounds like an outtake from Rainbow's Bent out of Shape.... horrible tune.

Or, it's a melodic rock masterpiece pairing one of the genre's greatest singers with a phenomenal guitarist and backing band.
