I don't think there is any best, but the one that is my favorite amongst many outstanding groups, is the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

For The Beatles they are confirmed sales figures of 1967 same with The Monkees except the thing was was that The Monkees’ albums didn’t sell after this (I mean look what happened in 1968). Even there albums got reissues in the 1980s when The Monkees had their comeback More Of The Monkees got to number 96 with the other two albums outside of the top 100. When the 2-disc editions came out (which do have sales numbers) MOTM sold 20,000 copies with HQ selling 15,000 and Pisces selling 10,000. Yes these albums have sold more over time but nowhere near what they did on original release which make there not much of a change on the overall sales. (I think the sales were rounded off at the million but I’m probably wrong about that)

I believe the Monkees had most stuff issued at least twice on CD, not sure if a few of the later LPs made the first CD series, but Rhino reissued all the CDs. They did have somewhat of a comeback in the CD age.

There are so many great groups making historic recordings in 1967. If I would've given 1966 to The Beatles I would have to give 1967 to Pink Floyd.

The Velvet Underground would be my number two group for 1966. I'm not looking at sales charts but the recordings themselves and what year they were recorded, just to be clear. :D

I was even less than that in '67, Nursery School in '67 - 68 was my itinerary.

My first LPs were "The Partridge Family" then I got "The Monkees Golden Hits"
as a reward for basically not failing a quiz in '71, Lulz. I didn't get another LP
until '78, "Some Girls". Then I got a slew of Beatle records, Yardbirds ...
I don't think Monkees LPs could be had easily 'til at least The Mid '80s.

I'll bet those who dug "Pepper" when it came out were surprised what they
    served up 18 months later!

The Dead? My favorite aspect for years was the art, then got "Skeletons ..."
in The Early '80s. A real slow burner band for me. A rich, deep catalogue
    have they.

The Easybeats - possibly their best LP in Friday on my Mind plus some great singles stopping just before their pop blunder Hello, How Are You.

The Tages - 2 of their best albums with Contrast and Studio, plus a plethora of single tracks.

Difficult to use years as markers when often a band did a lot within a year, just not a calendar year. For instance Buffalo Springfield put out their first album Dec. 5th 1966 and then the next 11 months later.

And not just whimsy, they were utter metal live.

Probably the two bands pushing the most unique envelopes at that moment.

Grateful Dead was getting there, but the muse of their weirdness crystalized in winter '68.

I would see The Who and Floyd much later.
I only wish I could have seen these acts in the late 60's.

Looking at the music released during that year, I could go back and forth between the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Doors. Two great albums each.

I love the Velvet Underground, but they’ve been beat out on quantity (I don’t enjoy VU’s one album from 1967 more than I enjoy the two released by JHE or the Doors).
