Now we go to an Elton John single that had some chart impact in the U.S., but did nothing in the U.K. After his collaboration with Thom Bell got some positive buzz, he tried to make lightning strike twice with another disco producer, Pete Bellotte. The result was "Victim Of Love":

This one could only scrape by at #31 in US Billboard, #38 in Cash Box, and #57 in Record World. Unlike the Bell collaboration, this one has been given a thumbs-down generally speaking. The same-titled LP would ultimately be his third-lowest charted album in the States.

This still packs a punch today. Pauline Black is such an endearing figure from that era - always enjoy listening to her whenever she crops up on music programmes and documentaries

    03 - 28 - 19 - The Specials Featuring Rico + - A MESSAGE TO YOU RUDY / NITE KLUB
Two excellent tracks battling to outdo each other

    05 - 31 - 26 - Herb Alpert - RISE
The world's greatest ladies shampoo ad music that never was... makes the "The Lonely Bull" sound like Motorhead

    04 - 46 - 39 - Lene Lovich - BIRD SONG
From the brilliance of "Lucky Number" to the annoyance of this. The same trend was mirrored in both singles' parent albums, with Flex a big disappointment compared to Stateless

    04 - 39 - 49 - The Stranglers - NUCLEAR DEVICE (THE WIZARD OF AUS)
An average track; not a word I use lightly with one of my favourite bands of all time

    1 - NEW - 51 - Madness - ONE STEP BEYOND...
    Iconic. 10 out of 10

    05 - 49 - 54 - Eagles - HEARTACHE TONIGHT
I probably would have ceremoniously binned this in my youth; but a 4 year stint in the US and a mellowing with age has somewhat softened my stance...

    03 - 59 - 57 - Supertramp - GOODBYE STRANGER
Lyrics like what I imagined life in California to be like at the time. A much bigger hit in the US and deservedly so

    02 - 66 - 58 - Amii Stewart - JEALOUSY
Had this on 7"; I prefer it to "Knock on Wood" - I think it was big on the continent if I recall...

    1 - NEW - 75 - The Tourists - I ONLY WANT TO BE WITH YOU
Liked this at the time, rarely revisit it today. Much greater things were awaiting Lennox and Stewart not so far in the future

Nothing special by any definition but not really as awful as most people generally make out. I have a history of not minding artists' biggest chart disappointments; with Pete Bellotte (of Donna Summer fame) and Sylvester Levay (of "Fly Robin Fly" fame) on writing credits, John and his label probably thought they were onto a winner with this. Also for some inexplicable reason, I have a feeling this was a decent-sized hit in France.

It did, however, figure as background music in a highly-rated U.S. TV soap opera in a manner not appropriate for a music forum, and especially this thread. That had a good deal to do with it making US #1.

El sonido más marchoso y vacilón que existe actualmente... funny that this got a Spanish version (and Chas nails it!)

#16 of 1979 (#446 in total) - "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman" by Dr. Hook
    (#1 for 3 weeks - 17 November 1979-01 December 1979)

The UK single (with two different picture sleeves):

The US single (with no picture sleeve, now way no how):

Wikipedia entry - also NME #485 (4 weeks - 10 November-01 December 1979) and Melody Maker #424 (2 weeks - 03 November-10 November 1979); had peaked in the U.S. before that, at #6 in Billboard, #5 in Cash Box, #4 in Record World, and #3 in Radio & Records. Perhaps their biggest hit under this incarnation (as opposed to their days as "Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show").

Now for those I'd have (any 'oldie' in the bunch would be in its original pressing from 'way back when' . . . ):

The order of release between his second and third singles from his Off The Wall LP was the reverse in the UK from the US. In the States this was his third, reaching #10 in both Billboard and Record World, #11 in Cash Box, and #9 in Radio & Records in Spring 1980.

    [IMG] [IMG]
This future Yuletide standard, "at the time," only made two US charts: Cash Box (at #83) and Record World (at #94); didn't make Billboard's Hot 100 until 2018 - 2018!!! - at which point it peaked at #47.

And now for the other 'newies':
Two different singles in the U.S., and each charted separately:
"Confusion" peaked at #37 in US Billboard, #47 in Cash Box, and #44 in Record World . . .
. . . whilst "Last Train To London's" highest chart positions were: Billboard #39, Cash Box #36 and Record World #51.
A future #1; for details, see the Every UK #1 Single of The 1980's Discussion Thread.

Reached its U.S. chart peaks in July 1980: #8 in both Billboard and Record World, and #6 in both Cash Box and Radio & Records.

Lena Martell - One Day At A Time

Pleasant enough and well sung, but not really for me.

I can't recall hearing this on the radio in the last 40 years, or back in 1979 come to think of it. It must have received a lot of airplay and a lot of people must have bought the single.

Its UK-vs-US chart trajectory would ultimately be the reverse of her 1975 U.S. hit "At Seventeen" which didn't even make the UK charts.

In Spring 1980, this got all the way up to #13 in US Billboard, #12 in Cash Box, #14 in Record World, and #11 in Radio & Records.

A new U.S. label. Not that it did any good for them on the US charts . . .

His first single from his ambitious Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants LP, this managed to reach #4 in US Billboard, #5 in Cash Box, and #12 in both Record World and Radio & Records.

Their best-known hit up to this point, got up to #8 in US Billboard, #10 in Cash Box, #13 in Record World, and #18 in Radio & Records.

In the U.S., the prior charted UK single was this record's B side.

What happened to the John guy?
I grew to enjoy his Canadian take on the 70’s U.K. charts...

Blondie are now soaring, a full on mega pop group churning out fantastic singles.
Union City Blues is one of their very best.
Blondie and ABBA ruled during this period...

This set will be more digestible, I promise . . .

The first major rap single, in spite of being only commercially issued on 12" it still managed to get to #36 in both US Billboard and Cash Box, and #45 in Record World. The 45 ish, as noted, was for jukeboxes and radio stations.

The second single from their same-titled LP, this one was a "sorta', kinda' " #1, sitting at that position for 2 weeks (04 January-11 January 1980) on US Radio & Records' National Airplay / 30; everywhere else, its peak was #8 on Billboard's Hot 100, #10 in Cash Box' Top 100, and #4 on Record World's Singles Chart.

Oh I've enjoyed his particular "way with words" on those, and the prior '60's UK charts. He indicated something about taking a little break because of the overwhelming crush of 'newies' in the wake of the UK chart expanding to a Top 75. Only now is @Mulderre returning to the fold.

I am also taking an off time, because the Top 75, coupled with a very hasty return to work, makes me unable to make my comments. I'll be writing a big chunk as a 70s review, though.

Well, when you can, that's all what counts at this point. We are getting closer and closer to the end, though.

The charts really were interesting and varied in 1979. Having left school parties were a regular event, smooching to Still and Nights In White Satin and jumping around to One Step Beyond and the brilliant -

Union City Blue - probably may favourite Blondie single.
Voulez-Vous - certainly my favourite Abba album, stacked with tremendous singles.
