Tattoo from Van Halen’s A Different Kind Of Truth album. I think that single killed the momentum of the album.
As others have said, Get On Your Boots from U2 No Line on The Horizon album. Bad choice of single. That song shouldn’t have even been on the album TBH.

'Fire' by U2 (off October). Yes it was a hit but god it's dreary for a 45. It's follow-up 'Gloria'..now that should have been the lead single!

    I like GOYB....:hide:

Considering the talents of the two men involved, it was completely underwhelming and a poor representative of what Thriller had to offer but as you state, a #2 record ain't anything to scoff at. Wait. Billy Don't Be A Hero was a #1 record so there's that.

Mixed Emotions was, by far, the highest charting single released from Steel Wheels.

It may even be their last Billboard top 20, peaking at #5.

    What would you have chosen?

Well, Michael Jackson was never a niche artist to begin with and the album before Thriller had 4 Top 10 singles, two of which hit #1 on the Pop charts. Just sayin'.

I came here to post this. I can't believe it took until page 7 to see it.

So true, re: Tattoo. The worst song on the album.

Good one! I'd also add "Honkin Down The Highway" from Love You. Terrible choice.

'Revival' was the lead single from Eurythmics' final album We Too Are One — except for the US market, where it wasn't released at all. That was the correct decision. The majestic 'Don't Ask Me Why' should have been the first single released worldwide.

I would describe it as bold -it’s a shame there are not more open minded thinkers around. Catchiest song on the album.

Only in the Uk - less so in the US as I recall?

Yup, Shame On The Moon was Seger's highest charting single (#2 for 4 weeks) until Shakedown (#1) five years later.

“I’m Gonna Love You Too” - Blondie from Parallel Lines

On a classic album chock full of potential hits, Chrysalis chose a Buddy Holly cover & the weakest tune on the album as the lead off US single. It bombed. The second single “Heart of Glass” would do a little better :)

Eurythmics tended not to put their best foot forward....think When Tomorrow Comes, Would I Lie To You, and of course the mad but genius Beethoven. The hoped-for smash would usually come next. Or fourth, in the case of Savage.

Joni Mitchell never burned up the singles chart but even her most die-hard fans must have experienced a WTF moment when Raised On Robbery was rolled out in anticipation of Court & Spark. Me? I loved it.

Going to #2 on the Hot 100 isn't exactly a momentum killer. Though I think "Even Now" is a vastly better song, it didn't do that.

Yeah, I acknowledged the chart success in my post. That being said, anything they released as the first single probably would've been successful considering the hype surrounding the album. I figure if you chose "Sad, Sad, Sad" to lead off the album then why not make it the first single. It's a better song for sure.

You have William it was Really Nothing and How Soon Is Now

They chose the first for A side.
Perhaps a UK top 20 hit, HSIN was more epic.

Later, they tried HSIN as A side, it was too late for a big success...

Certainly in the UK, although in Australia all those lead singles were the highest charting from their respective albums.

I also have to correct myself - We Too Are One wasn’t their final album. I forgot all about Peace!

Feeling' Stronger Every Day sounded great on the radio! They were still using it at or near the end of their concerts to rev up the crowd when I saw them in 1978.

Looking at their first four WB records, we’re talking about:

    Orange Crush
    Losing My Religion
    Drive
    What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?

I’m not sure I’d call any of those “oddball” choices.

I can kind of see a case for “Drive” except that it’s one of my favorite tracks on the album, and it got plenty of airplay at the time.
