From that Charlie Rose interview you posted later: Martin seemed more bemused by the odd experience of his evening with Kubrick. Steve Martin smirks a lot, and that can make him seem smug and superior. But I don't think he was implying, "I'm glad I didn't work with that guy!"

I think @Neil Anderson is probably confusing Robert Downey Jr. and Bacon...

even more embarrassing: for some reason, I remembered Kevin Bacon's character in Novocaine as having been in Bowfinger. Oops.

Any interview online with someone who met Kubrick gets really excited or has a big smile talking about him....except for Steve Martin.

Probably the best documentary (series) ever made. I suspect it will continue as long as Michael Apted is able to do it.

"Tootsie" not good enough to count?

He was also in "Melvin and Howard", which I never saw but which has a good reputation, I think...

Never heard of that one. His contributions to "Tootsie" and "On Golden Pond" were superb, but the roles were minor ones and I don't consider either of those films great. I'm sure I'm in the minority which is not unusual.

Given Coleman was a supporting actor in the vast majority of his films, I think ya gotta count the "minor roles" for the purpose of this thread.

I can see omitting stuff like "Towering Inferno", where he really did play a minor role, but he's 4th billed in "Tootsie" and 5th billed in "Pond" - those are large supporting parts...

Gary Oldman. One of my top three actors, but never in what I’d consider a “great” film.

He's been in all the Christian Bale Batman films, as well as much of the Harry Potter series. True Romance has a huge cult following. (Although his role there was minor.) All these movies were critically well-received.

    But none were “great.”

Ann Sheridan; she and Cagney were good together in 1940's Torrid Zone, but I wouldn't call that a great film (good and enjoyable, but not great). She was offered Mildred Pierce and turned it down; Joan Crawford snagged it and got an Oscar.

Probably right. The Contender was probably the best film he was in imo but I don't know if I would consider it GREAT.

I think Sid & Nancy is a great film but I understand that I may be in the minority there.

  22. Well it depends on how you define great movie. ‘Aliens” is considered a classic.

I think I'll go with Jenna Coleman, she's done some good television work but she hasn't really found her way into prominent roles in movies.

Never said Coleman never had a big role in anything. I didn't look through his whole filmography. (Never saw "Downhill Racer", but he's billed 7th, apparently.)

I just said that we can't only count his leads, mainly because he had so few.

I also disagreed that he had small parts in the movies mentioned. Like I said, he played prominent supporting parts in a bunch of movies.

Coleman was a character actor. He was never gonna be a leading man in movies, so he shouldn't be excluded from this thread because of that...
