Even though the McCartney II comparisons have been made, I can't believe that lightning would strike twice. Paul seems to be on too much of a roll to go that direction again.

If you get Tomorrow Never knows, this is a track so much ahead of its time. As you can see, I'm not a 60's lad and it took me years to go for it. The same for McII. I started liking it years after I listened to it for the first time.

I believe that TKN was "electronic" shock for most Beatles fans accostumed to In My Life and Michelle on RS. I truly doubt they fell in love for the song immediately.

As for today, Ever Present Past seems to have only the "feel" of some elements used on Mc II. As Paul is not an "effects" man, at least through most of his solo imput, people think it's kind of weird.

Anway, I have missed this unusual side of Macca and highly welcome the choice for a song like this as a single. It certainly is not a new Say, Say Say.

I had absolutely no problem with Say, Say, Say, loved the lyrics, the vocals, and the musicianship. What I don't want is another From A Lover To A Friend or another Temporary Secretary.

    Neither I, I'm a 80's kid!
I just meant that it wasn't something "pop to the core" like SSS.
Now I like the ones you dismissed...only think FALTAF could have a string arrangement and some editing.

    Ever Present Past (McCartney)

    Verse One:

I've got too much on my plate
Don't have no time to be a decent lover
I hope it isn't too late
Searching for the time that has gone so fast
The time that I thought would last
    My Ever Present Past

    Verse Two:

I've got too much on my mind
I think of everything to be discovered
I hope there's something to find
Searching for the time that has gone so fast
The time that I thought would last
    My Ever Present Past

    Chorus:

The things I think I did
    I do, I think I did
The things I think I did
When I was a kid, when I was a kid

    Middle:

I couldn't understand a word that they were saying
But still I hung around and took it all in
I wouldn't join in with the games that they were playing
It went by, it went by, in a flash
It flew by, it flew by, in a flash

    Short guitar solo

    Verse Three:

There's far too much on my plate
Don't have no time to be a decent lover
I hope it's never too late
Searching for the time that has gone so fast
The time that I thought would last
    My Ever Present Past

    Double Chorus

    End

Very interesting - thanks, Zipzorp! Definitely a meditation on aging (and running out of time). I'm looking forward to this.

Enough of the "MAC II" dissin'. It's fairly clear that some people LOVE it, and some HATE it.
    Here's to our sweet anticipation.

The SH website was in the news here in Orlando on a talk radio station this morning. During the news break, one of the stories was about the release of the single by Macca.

It was reported as being "first reported on the Steve Hoffman website along with the lyrics". They mentioned the site a couple times specifically. So anyone searching for the Steve Hoffman website will be coming here, I'm sure!

    Good job guys!

"Don't have no time to be a decent lover"--this line kinda makes me cringe, but then again, no reasonable person ever loved Paul for his lyric-writing.

And I know, "Eleanor Rigby" is a fine lyric--it's just the other 476 songs that I love for the music. ;)

No, no, it's not a grammar thing--it's the idea expressed. Is Paul now a sloppy lover? Only thinking about getting himself off? (You see, I don't like to ponder these things.)

    Paul is a great lyricist

    I disgaree-

Yeah, Paul, like all writers, has had a couple clumsy lyrics (the winner: "...and I acted like a dustbin lid" from The Other Me, runner-up "Oklahoma was never like this" from Press).

On the other hand-- there are a lot of groovy lyrics that don't get a lot of attention:
The willow turns his back on inclement weather (With a Little Luck)
I go back so far I'm in front of me (The World Tonight)
Like a lucifer she'll always shine (Letting Go)
No one thought to ask her what the letter G stood for/
But you can be for sure it wasn't GOOD (Sally G.)
I've been sliding down a slippy slope, I've been climbing up a slowly burning rope (Friends To Go)

So don't knock Paul too hard in the lyric dept.

And I LOVE the "decent lover" comment- I see it as sarcasm and take it in the same way as Silly Love Songs-- perhaps this response is to ONE, errrr, critic, as opposed to a group.

Funny--I almost mentioned "Tug of War" along with "Eleanor Rigby" as strong McCartney lyrics.

Sure, there are many good individual lines scattered throughout Macca's catalogue, but no soul alive can convince me that, overall, McCartney writes good lyrics. And that's o.k.--when you're as mind-blowingly gifted as a writer of melodies as he is, ya got nothing to apologize for. :)

    Flaming Pie (1997)

    Makin' love underneath the bed
Shooting stars from a purple sky
    I don't care how I do it.
I'm the man on the flaming pie
Stick my tongue out and lick my nose
Tuck my shirt in and zip my fly
    Go ahead, have a vision.
I'm the man on the flaming pie

Everything I do has a simple explanation.
When I'm with you, you could do with a vacation
I took my brains out and stretched 'em on a rack
Now I'm not so sure I'm ever gonna get 'em back

Cut my toes off to spite my feet.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry
    Never mind, check my rhythm.
