I never really understood why artists bitch about writing or having a very successful song that made them a ton of money, but they do...

which ones do you know that openly criticized their own songs? Doesn't even have to be a successful song, just any songs. Is "disown" maybe a term for that?

here video of Jani Lane whining about Cherry Pie

It seems to me that Kate Bush doesn't like anything she did pre- Hounds Of Love.

    I might be wrong though...

Even on the "sick of playing" it level---I mean, I guess for big hits on the margin there are some tv appearances or whatever in which you ONLY play the big hit, but for bands, especially early in their career, playing full sets, there are a WHOLE LOT OF songs, not just the "big hit," that you will be playing pretty much every time you perform, just as often as the big hit.....

[I cannot verify this, but recall hearing from people who saw them on their first US tour that Big Country played "In a Big Country" twice a set.....the only time I ever recall anyone doing a song more than once a set in any show I attended was the Kanye/Jay Z tour in which, in absurd excess, they did "N***** in Paris" like 8 times in a row toward end of set....]

It does always leave a sour taste in my mouth, this public dissage of their own work that lots of fans love, when bands do it. It is of course their right, I just don't like it.

I also have this impression that Phil Collins dislikes all of his and Genesis' songs that lack an "I love you" in the lyrics...

  8. Bob Seger's first 6 or so albums - evidently he hated every song, as they remain unreleased. That's a whole chunk of catalog.

That's right, he did, and he was wrong and I was right (to love it)! The bridge alone marks it as fully worthy of glory, the part ending with "...used to being guilty!"

Yeah, John called a number of his songs "a piece of garbage" when going through his catalog for Playboy in 1980

Maybe not hated but Jim Kerr of Simple Minds wasn't crazy about Don't You Forget About Me.

    He didn't like the lyrics.

John Lennon tended to dismiss anything that had to be worked on, or was done on deadline. He wanted them to crystallize from thin air.

His resentment toward his 'crafted' songs is wearying, but he only had 10 years in which to form his opinions of them. We've had no fresh evaluations from him in 40 years.

Paul McCartney hates his White Album demo of Etcetera. That's why sadly we will never get to hear it.
