Favourite European Film?

A lot of great choices.

 

Most of my favourite films are European, I prefer them a lot more than Hollywood film and even local (Australian) films.

Haven't seen it for years but Betty Blue was a great film.

 

Never be made these days.....nudity.

Mesrine is a terrific movie -- parts 1 and 2.

 

I saw Cinema Paradiso, very good movie, the end is very touching. I'm gonna have to watch some more Italian movies. I think I've only seen Malena with Monica Bellucci.

 

Prefer Cinema Paradiso theatrical cut.

 

Excellent performance from Vincent Cassel.

 

Begs repeat viewing. Apparently Michael Jackson liked “A Secret Wish”.

All classics.
Not seen Swept Away since it came out. Not referring to Guy Ritchie film.

 

I never saw the remake. I heard it was quite dreadful.

I did (unfortunately) see the 1983 "remake" of Breathless (which, speaking of the original, is in some ways my very favorite film--one I've seen countless times) that had Richard Gere and Valerie Kaprisky in a role reversals on the Jean-Claude Belmondo and Jean Seberg characters--and it was bloody awful! An abomination. Burn sage! LOL.

Swept Away was the only one on the list that I was back and forth over inclusion. It has been a long time. Not 100% sure it would hold up. Liked it at the time.

Another Lina Wertmuller film I’ve not seen in decades is “Seven Beauties “ (1975). Which I found amusing at the time, don’t know how’s its held up.

 

Another oldie ( but interesting) goodie is What? (1972).

 

Great soundtrack also, that scene with the piano.

 

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy (Scandinavian)

 

As did I.

I also liked Diva (which was mentioned earlier in the thread). Definitely a Nagra.

I'd like to add Round Midnight starring my musical hero Dexter Gordon and directed by Bertrand Tavernier. Does it count as a "foreign film?" Perhaps borderline. But a must see for jazz fans IMO.

I was lucky to have two close by (the NuArt and the Royal in West LA).

My dad--who was a filmmaker and a serious student of cinema--used to take me with him to see the latest foreign releases in the 60s and 70s.

There was also an obscure theatre in midtown that ran only Japanese films--for a mostly Japanese speaking audience--and we'd always go the see the latest Kurosawa pictures. I loved that.

You memory is better than mine, but I still have my dad's old Nagra that was just like the one the kid used in the movie.

My dad always treated his Nagra like gold. It is is absolutely mint condition.

No. Me neither. Some of my all time favorite films are in black and white and have subtitles.
