On the hopeful side, Alfonso Cuaron's recent film Roma got a pretty great reception despite being in black and white and being subtitled.

Perhaps there's hope for these hipsters yet?

It was made for Netflix. I assume they are still streaming it, if you have that service.

BTW as a kid I got to meet Roy Lichtenstein at the Gemini gallery here in LA. Not sure the year, '66 or '67, I think.

I also got to meet Claes Oldenburg about the same time as Roy Lichtenstein (and also at Gemini). Nice man. Very warm to me--an 8 or 9 year old kid.

A few years before that--1964/65 I saw Andy Warhol setting up an installation of his Brillo Boxes in a funky exhibition space above the Egg and the Eye restaurant near LACMA. I was more fascinated by the boxes that by Andy. LOL. What did I know?

To get back to film, like @FallenLeaves I almost chose Last Year at Marienbad. I remember figuring out how to always win the stick game they play in that film, so I taught it to my school chums (and always beat them). LOL.

Andy Warhol’s Joe Dallesandro ( Walk In The Wildside) stars in it.

I'm not sure how well this one will hold up over time, but I enjoyed it immensely.

Yeah, I was going to mention this one as a worthwhile Dutch production. It's kind of pulpy, but that's pretty much Paul Verhoeven's strike zone.

A few other Dutch films scoring well on Rotten Tomatoes and which have gotten international distribution:
    • Character (1997) - won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film
    • Soldier of Orange (1977) - early Rutger Hauer film. Directed by Verhoeven.
    • Spetters (1980) - also Verhoeven. Stars prominent Dutch actress Renee Soutendijk.
    • The 4th Man (1983) - Verhoeven and Soutendijk again

Definitely want to avoid the 1993 American remake (of The Vanishing). Same director, but no good at all.

Das Boot was the first film which leaped to mind when I saw the thread topic. The Lives of Others is also really, really great.

If you're interested in European violent leftist radicals of the late 60s/early 70s, I recommend The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008). They were The Weather Underground of West Germany.

    Hold up ?
Not really a classy arthouse, but as a revenge film I’m sure it hold up very well in the future.

    Das Boot?

Seen that when it came out. Impressive in the cinema.

    The Lives Of Others?

Yes ! excellent. I like stasi related films.

Bruno Ganz was excellent in “ Unknown “(2011) reminded me of Mark E Smith.
