Yes, it was that "new wave" thing. Think Cars, Devo, etc. And truth be told, bad synth did rule a lot of the 80s, so guess they were right in that respect. lol

The fact that just about every version of this on CD is a remix except for the old MCA is the bane of my existence. Even trying to find a rip of the vinyl with the old mix, I've come up empty. At least I still have my old record. This album is one of the reasons I'm going back to vinyl as a compliment to my CD collection. Sometimes the best option is still 33 1/3.

Is the original mix better than the remix, in your opinion?

ZZ Top's use of them was fantastic. Unbelievable career resurgence. It never sounded forced. They really went for it!

It's so essential to have both formats, especially when collecting The Who!

Agreed! It can be done but the artists have to have a good ear for that sort of thing. Unfortunately most proved they did not. :shake:

I'm not saying its better necessarily, its just the sound I grew up with and what I'm used to hearing. And by the way, I'm not just talking about the song, but the entire album. Hearing "Had Enough" with the changed horn section just sounds wrong.

To be honest, the song "Who Are You" on the remix isn't really a problem at all for me. It sounds pretty much the same as I remember it.

So when we hear this song on the radio today are we almost certainly listening to the remix?

So true. I've nothing against synth music and love the likes of Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Human League etc, but unless they knew what they were doing, like The Who, ZZ Top, Van Halen & Queen did, they generally sound awful and sometimes ridiculous in rock.

Yeah, another one that springs to mind is Meaty Beaty B&B to get the full version of Magic Bus.

I haven't listened to the radio in years, so I have no idea really but I'd wager it is the remix. But again, without hearing them side by side, I'd be hard pressed to say which is which.

I remember reading a review of WaY when it came out the reviewer said
The Who's music didn't change enough! Now the synths get slagged off.

I just played the Japan for MCA 1985 CD. Doesn't have the "long version".
I agree w/ all the positive and some of the negative comments above.

    Hooligans it is! Thank you.

The Who's synths don't generally get slagged off though. Most fans like them on Who's Next, Quadrophenia and the Who Are You song.

I think there was only a US CD. I'd like the Two's Missing CD but it didn't come out in the UK and is expensive here.

Edit: Looking on Discogs it didn't come out in the UK at all. No wonder I never see it.

I have never seen the 3:22 single version of Who Are You anywhere but the 45 rpm U.S. single. There are longer edited versions on CDs, but not the same listening experience!

That's too bad. I thought that might be the case, because I have almost all the Who's comps and didn't think I had it.

Is the exact UK 45 version on any CD? It's been a while since I played it.

Yeah I'm old enough that I still listen to regular radio here and there, but also stream and Sirius even more, so was wondering more what's being heard out there in general. I'm thinking it's likely the remix is what you hear now wherever you hear it. :agree:

I agree wholeheartedly except for Who Are You. It does have great moments. But the repetitiveness of the chorus got really old, really quick for me. By the time that came out I was already a hardened Who fan. I had everything from Tommy thru Who Are You at that point.

I like your use of the adjective "wimpy" in places. So true. Guitar And Pen and Love Is Coming Down immediately come to mind.

The only decent stuff comes from The Ox on this record imo.

This would be the second self-pity album by Townshend as far as I can tell. He should have titled one of them My Struggle.
