One of the best rock’n’roll album covers of all time! Like Exile On Main Street, it visualises the broad and diverse music styles that appears on the record.

Horrid. But for Thompson covers, this is as outre as it gets!

And exactly how did this bland and almost monochromatic cover do that?

The archetypal example is surely the self-titled album from Tony Banks' project, Strictly Inc:

Appallingly ugly cover, concealing some absolutely brilliant music.

As a record, it’s among the best they ever made.

I'm not familiar. Is it actually a brilliant album?

The cover of Exile on Main Street is a straight steal of a Robert Frank picture, that I believe was taken before he was working with the Stones (someone can correct me on that, I am not sure about this).
I love Robert Frank's pictures, wonderful stuff....

I think so, yes. But I know there are those who don't like it, so you just have to make up your own mind.

I don’t mind Atom Heart Mother, but it’s not a brilliant album.

The original cover had die-cut windows that could show different pictures. It’s chaotic and almost mosaic-like nature of pictures of the band and old and new photos of random nature, captures the music within as it also contains old and new tracks. The building is structured and the picture is sephia-like. At the same time the building is filthy and dirty. Like the music.

Don't know if I'd call it horrible, but I never could warm up to the album cover for Revolver.

To be honest, I greatly prefer Robert Freeman's original unused concept:

I'm convinced that Tony pulled out all the stops in an attempt - largely successful - to ensure the album shifted as few units as possible. As well as that cover, he unsuccessfully tried to avoid having his name anywhere on the cover - and then anyone who picked the album out of the rack in a store out of morbid curiosity and asked for a test listen would have encountered, as the opening track, what is probably the least interesting song on the album. It's all uphill from there.

Still, it was chosen for it’s random style and pictures of american freaks of different nature. Totally captures the spirit of the music.

No, it’s not. Tony Banks’ solo albums with the exception of A Curious Feeling are failures both musically and conceptually. His best work remains with Genesis. He is someone that needed other strong musical personalities to bring out the best in him. When he’s on his own, there’s really no one to push him in this direction.

But why record and release it? Contractual obligation?

I rather like that cover, in fact I think it's one of their best. The cover of Presence, on the other hand, is just silly.
