Fantastic album (with some great Duane Allman playing, no less), but who in their right mind would have even approved of this? I understand 1971 was a different time, but this is so over the top it's hard to believe it was done unironically rather than as some form of parody!

As quirky and eccentric as the music therein.

I venture to suggest that the Pet Sounds cover does have two redeeming qualities:
    - the font
    - the colour scheme
    ...both of which are iconic.

    Shame about the picture though!

They probably had to throw all of their clothes away as goat smell is pretty adhesive

Supposedly Weymouth wanted to do something cutting-edge with computer graphics, which was just starting to become feasible at the time. Originally it was a series of fighter planes rendered by a computer, superimposed over mountains, which is on the back of the album. Since the Iran crisis kicked off, it was decided that warplanes would be in bad taste, so they quickly dashed off this.

An iconic cover to be sure, but for all the wrong reasons in my opinion. The picture of the warplanes is far superior.

Very "precious" in a creepy way...brilliant record though.

This cover always gets mentioned in threads of this nature, and I think it's a great cover - a juxtaposition of man as a creature of nature, against a backdrop of the extremely artificial sterile environment that he sometimes inhabits. Had the figure not been naked, much of the point would have been lost.

I'm not sure why so many people seem to have issues with the human body.

I'm pretty sure Everything But The Girl has one cover where it appears that a child has just urinated in the street.

Re the Rolling Stones: my criticism of their covers is not so much to do with the covers being ugly - though some are - but that the "artwork" (I use the word loosely) seems to have nothing to do with the album title or the music. Goatshead Soup is a case in point. What the hell has a woman's face got to do with the name?Same applies to Undercover. I don't particularly like the cover of Some Girls, but at least it had the virtue of being directly relevant to the album title.

I really dislike the cover of The Beatles Abbey road. I can't believe they couldn't get Paul to walk in step with the others and at least put on a pair of shoes.

I think Reckoning is their best album art. It's got more real character than the "arty" cut n paste jobs on so many of their sleeves after this. Fables, Lifes, Document are very unappealing covers to me.

Except it’s Mick’s face - isn’t it?! (Goes to check)

Don’t know if it being so unrecognisable makes it worse
