Yeah, this thread is a total headscratcher to me as well. At least a third of the covers posted here are excellent and iconic album covers!

Maybe just rename it O.K albums with O.K covers or rubbish albums with rubbish covers or something else completely irelevant.

Assuming for a moment this is a brilliant album and I know many people think so, this is a great cover - but only if you know the person depicted.

Charles Hawtrey was a mainstay of Carry On films (slapstick and innuendo); he was also a very waspish (being kind) gay actor (at a time when this was illegal); he drank and smoked himself to death.

    So post modernism galore

I thought The Kinks LP artwork is really nice. The original LP is very silver and brown and it's quite distinguishable and suits the record IMHO.

Zappa’s Drowning Witch cover is taken from a book called “Droodles”.
I don’t know the author. Zappa must have noticed that his name contains that particular drawing.
You can flip the CD booklet for a nice portrait of Frank and Moon.

I like the Going For The One cover. It appears to move.
The buildings are the Century City TV studios which are probably in LA.
You can see them sometimes in TV shows.

I’ve always thought the Atom Heart Mother cover was a
reference to magic mushrooms, which grow in cow pastures.

It's a fantastic British pop album full of wit, charm and great songs. But to me the cover isn't up to the album

I know who it is. The band members had no say in the cover, which has been described as "an adman's approximation of a Smiths cover" by Mojo magazine.

I like the original UK cover for the double EP set, seen below. I hate all of the junk added to the American LP cover... the ugly orange and blue background, the song titles in that horrible red font, the advertisement for the 24-page picture book, etc. As usual, the Beatles got it right, then Capitol found a way to mess it up. At least they added five more songs, so the actual LP itself was better.

  14. How is this horrible? He looks like a character from one of his songs, which seems appropriate to me.

Great photo, all that crap surrounding it is terrible. I don't think any collector would make that choice.

I've always thought that cover looks cool. I've never heard the album.

(Concerning Pet Sounds) Well... I like the green and yellow. And I like the font used as well - it makes me feel 'fuzzy'.

But that's it. I don't like the goat's bottom. Or Mike Love's apparent disinterest.

This is the cover of the CD I bought in the 90's, but the original cover was that variation on the American flag, right? Does anyone know why it was changed to this for the CD release?

Absolutely. His outlook on the pic fits perfectly with the mood of the album

I've seen vinyl copies with that sleeve too. Not with all that rubbish surrounding it. I think they might have changed the cover when it was reissued without a gatefold and that got dreadfully carried over to this CD.

Oh, I've always liked that cover.

I hate the one for 'Pablo Honey' - but can't comment on the album as I've never heard it.

Done by UK design team Hipgnosis, who did most (all?) of the 70s Floyd covers.
Quite brilliant all of them IMO, created a mysterious vibe/visual image for the band that wasn't based on their physical appearance.

I've always liked the Atom Heart Mother sleeve too. One of their best.
