Poll: still buying cds?

And my CD collection is still growing. Since my last post in this thread, I've nabbed a whole bunch of common and hard-to-find CDs locally and from online sellers in Canada.

 

I buy CDs most weeks. I love them. Sound great on my rig!! I like LPs too but they are so expensive. My family buy me LPs for birthdays, Father's day and Christmas. I learnt to stream during lockdown but it simply did not rock my boat. I need to be able to hold what i listen to. Not physically of course!!

 

I just salvaged this morning a couple of hundred CDs thrown away by a neighbor. Plenty of music from artists I like, from Santana to Aerosmith. It took me a bit of trash diving but you can't beat the price.

 

Stopped buying CDs and Vinyl recently. Digital is the future.

 

only buy them now if its something obscure enough that i cant find a flac download of.

I tend to find something i like on spotify and if i cant find the flac download ill buy the cd on discogs.

I recently got into Tom Waits. I slowly bought his discography on CD for roughly $5 an album. Vinyl would have been $20-30 for each record. The best part is the CDs sound REALLY good on my system.

 

Both CD and vinyl along with streaming all sound good on my system but like you said, the high cost of good vinyl is expensive. CD's are also a lot easier to just pop in and listen to.

 

CDs: I just need maybe 10 more titles that I really want but I wouldn't turn down any that I would enjoy if I found them cheap.

Did clean out my LPs, 90%+ M- actual vinyl. I'll try to sell 25 - the $20+ ones, see what happens. 150 got to go ~ probably to the used record store here. If he doesn't want them ~ Goodwill. They are in the garage already.

Next... is the CD ' cleanout '. Haven't figured out what to do with them yet. My thinking is 300 have to go. That would still leave me 800+.

If I had a 'mancave' ... I'd keep them all.

It's so hard to 'clean-out' music.

This has been a big month for the 5" silver discs chez moi. Got the new John Lennon Gimme Some Truth 2-CD set of new mixes, and the BluRay of Roger Waters' Us+Them tour. I liked that so much, I bought the 2-CD version.

I'm not buying many new CDs anymore, but I'd say upwards of a dozen a year take up permanent residence on my shelves. I have the free version of Spotify on my 'phone now, but the idea there is to check out new CDs to purchase.

 

Free is always good.

New releases i'll either vinyl or stream. Will make an exception for box sets that include tracks vinyl release doesn't.

And still buying a ton of SACDs.

 

It's probably an age thing, and the feeling that you don't 'own' music until you have a physical product in your hands.

I can't stop buying both CDs and records: what I need to get better at is selling off the stuff that doesn't get played. I should practice 'one in, one out' but, well, you know...

 

I keep buying CDs despite subscribing to both Deezer and Qobuz. Some stuff isn't available to stream, and sometimes obscure music I like disappears from the streaming services. And I like to own stuff

 

Probably got bought about 60 CDs new and used since COVID 19 started.

 

I had to buy one today only because Bon Chic Bon Genre is urgently currently inexplicably unavailable on vinyl

 

Bought 6 CD’s and 4 LP’s today. All used but in good condition. Total €48

Oh and I also bought me a new CD player today so I guess I’ll be buying and playing CD’s for a long time.

I like streaming as it’s a great way to discover new music but in the end I’d rather have a physical copy.

 

If it's cheaper than the digital option, yep, or if it's a promo/single that you can't get the tracks digitally. Otherwise, what's the point, especially when all I do is rip the CD and put it on a shelf anyway? Whatever gets me the music the cheapest way possible.

 

I buy mostly vinyl but sometimes a good CD is the way to go.

Funny, I have stopped buying physical media almost entirely, and I have also attributed it to being an age thing. At 60 years old, I just don’t want any more stuff!

 

For new music (21st century) I only buy digital downloads. For older music I don't have already, I look for good masterings on CD. Got rid of vinyl 30 years ago and never looked back.
