In order not to be repetitive, I'll make it as one post.

What genres did he cross, how great is his legacy, etc.

    Talk about my man here.

Not the biggest fan, but I do like the song “Keep it Dark” off Abacab. Good beat and groove.

I Missed Again was his first hit single and is superior to the follow up, In the Air Tonight. There, I said it.

Progressive rock icon, pop star, jazz fusion drummer with Brand X. Big band drummer. His legacy is secure imo. He's a great musician, vocalist, zillion selling solo artist, and member of one of the great prog rock bands in history.

I think ' ' In The Air Tonight ' is fantastic.
I also enjoy ' South Park's relentless ragging on Collins.

I can't get enough of these Phil Collins threads, the man had an insane solo run and would appreciate these tributes.

One of the finest drummers of all times.

Genesis fully became Genesis thanks so his drumming

So weird how music works. If I could cut any song from an 80's Genesis album, it'd be that one. :hide:

Nothing but respect for Phil Collins, even though I don't like most of his solo work and the later Genesis albums

One of the best drummers in rock and in fusion, plus a versatile vocalist and a capable songwriter.

With the exception of Face Value, his solo stuff is not for me. But he’s an all-round legend.

Yup. Bad and dumb song, but still less grating to me than "Keep It Dark." I don't know, there's something about it that just always irked me. "Illegal Alien" kind of knows it's a dumb song. There were no b-sides to the 1983 album so I imagine that helped it make the record, but Abacab had the most extra tracks of any Genesis album, and I think a couple of them are superior.

Having seen him perform with Genesis 15x from '78-'86, I beg to differ.

I've never really explored the b-sides. Are they collected somewhere streamable these days? I'd like to check them out! Qobuz just has the "2007 remaster" with the original track listing.

I find Abacab to be a bit uneven and seldom listen to it all the way through, but now and then certain tracks hit the spot for me.

Yeah, for sure. Between his solo stuff and the Genesis '80s releases, I had about as much as I could take for several decades! I didn't take any of his solo stuff for a spin again until the recent-ish remasters/remixes with "mature" Phil on the cover. Still can't make it through more than a few tracks of No Jacket Required ;) The remasters do sound really nice, though.

  24. Good songwriter.

    Better singer.

    Superb drummer.

Not a very bright guy. Remarries, has kids at 47 with a certifiable gold-digger, pays $46 million to close that out, goes back on a more casual basis, has her marry in secret while still living in his house, has her occupy his house, and demands another $20 million for the privilege. No wonder his body won't heal. The stress must be killing him.

Sadly, not yet. I hope that's something they rectify at some point. They were on the Archive #2 set, and then in the individual boxes of remixes that came out around 2007-08, but sadly those aren't streaming (yet). I don't think it's any particular reason why they aren't, just that no one's actually bothered to figure out how to add them.

Abacab is a bit uneven, but I like pretty much everything they did...even the uneven stuff, it's interesting to hear them try new things and evolve, even if "Keep It Dark" doesn't work for me, I see what they were trying to do with it. The b-sides from the Collins era are a mixed bag as well, but some of them are really great, like "The Day The Light Went Out" and "Do The Neurotic," and others like "On The Shoreline" can compete with the parent album tracks just fine.
