Funny, at one time I would have put Anthony Hopkins in Magic on this thread, but then I heard that one of Gene Wilder's biggest career regrets was not getting the part. Then after thinking about it, yeah, Wilder would have killed as an insane comedian/ventriloquist. Now Hopkins goes to the wrong actor thread.

It's as if the main role was written for Woody Allen.

  8. Speaking of Woody Allen movies, I think Diane Keaton was perfect for Sleeper.

Annie Hall doesn't count. That was like a documentary.

although you've got to admit that the guy they got to play Paul Simon in Annie Hall was perfect casting.

  13. Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch in "To Kill A Mockingbird" came immediately to mind. I can't picture anybody else playing that character, he was perfect.

Jackie Robinson in "The Jackie Robinson Story".

Give Cage credit for not going over-the-top like he usually does. In an otherwise zany film.

I'm with you on Hoffman. But regarding Redford: the handsome leading man as a dogged, scrappy investigative reporter just didn't work for me. I also thought he was a bit stiff in certain scenes. Of course, YMMV.....

I'm pretty sure he wrote the part for himself. And he had the self-awareness to design the role to play up his strengths. So he had a big leg up.

A couple of comedy duos that I thought were cast perfectly for the roles/film and worked great together. By themselves, they still would have been great, but cast with another perfectly matched character, it only adds to the film.

Dan Aykroyd & Eddie Murphy - Trading Places
Steve Martin & John Candy - Planes, Trains & Automobiles

I just noticed that Judge Hoffman was a couple of months away from turning 75 on the day the trial began. Maybe he wasn't up to a trial like that at that age - for a variety of reasons.

According to Wikipedia, he was not removed from the bench. However:

"In 1982, the Executive Committee of the United States District Court ordered that Hoffman not be assigned any new cases because of his age and complaints that he was acting erratically and abusively from the bench. However, he continued to preside over his ongoing cases until his death from natural causes the next year, a week before his 88th birthday."

There's more in the article about how Hoffman was unpopular with lawyers generally due to his lack of impartiality and abrasive personality. So it sounds like he was just a d!ck in general.
