Anyone else get the notice that you have to switch to eBay's managed payment system and not use Paypal anymore? The fees look higher and I don't know if I want to give eBay my banking account info. I sell on eBay as a hobby, I have a full time job. I mostly sell cassette tapes, blank and pre-recorded.

I would think that PayPal is still an option...no?

Are you sure that this is not a phishing email you got asking for your banking info?

I just did an ebay search looking for this memo and found nothing at all. I have a message in-box there of course and I looked in their seller resources. Nothing.

I can't list anymore on eBay unless I give them my checking account password. One problem, my bank isn't listed in their transfer over to non paypal and I don't have a checking account. People are leaving in droves. Nobody wants to give over info or don't have checking accounts or better yet their banks aren't listed. eBay is a joke. Imagine direct deposit into a checking account only. Farce. Paypal is great.

Imagine ebay reversing a payment (withdrawal from your checking) within 6 months, like 5 months after the fact because the buyer decided they didn't want the item after all. If they are sticking to the return policy, this is another no go for me.

Some folks opened an account strictly for PayPal deposits. This sounds like another reason to open an account - just for ebay, that is if one sticks around.

That's something I'm concerned about as well. I had to make the switch a few days ago. I don't sell very much on eBay, only once in a while, but when I do, it's usually not something super inexpensive.

With PayPal, if they ever tried to pull something like that months after a sale, they wouldn't be successful. The money would have long been transferred out of my PayPal, and I would simply abandon the account. They may close my eBay account, or try to ding my credit, but that's the extent of it. eBay having the ability to withdraw money from your bank account in the event that a buyer decides to scam you down the line is a big problem, in my book (and I am by no means a tin-foil-hat-wearing privacy obsessive).

I love buying things from eBay, but I can see why people hate selling there these days. They have made it a huge potential headache.

I haven't sold on ebay for several years when I got doinked by a dishonest buyer. I have continued to buy, and will state ebay and paypal does stand up for their buyers, as I have had less than a handful of sellers get removed from ebay and all my $ refunded.

My selling experience I referred to has put me off selling there. Even those 5 years ago, I as the seller had NO chance to present an honest reply. It is a more adversarial climate today.

The switch to this other payment system has been forewarned for several months, but I didn't realize it was to be mandatory. I thought it was ebay's default and official system, but that paypal would still be honored & supported. Guess I'm wrong again.....

They want to save money by eliminating Paypal and going to bank accounts. Imagine haggling about your checking account being looted by a crooked reversal by a crooked French guy.

Not exactly "saving money" by eliminated pp, more like get a bigger take of the action. OP stated he thinks that the fees are going higher on the payment end of it and not lower. That means it is not about saving money but grabbing more of it, especially if the fees are going higher - which is all eBay knows about, raising fees.

On ebay I found nothing about it, on a Google search I read some noise about it from last July. Maybe they are trying to test it out only on some sellers to start with - a soft launch.

They are not exactly pulling me in as a seller. And I have a stack of LPs that are autographed by classical performers, composers, and conductors - I'd really like to ebay them rather than Discogs, because they might find mini-bidding wars at ebay. But ebay is doing nothing to draw me in. So I might just leave those cool personally signed LPs in a box for another 8-10 years and deal with them later. I have plenty of stock to play around with at other sites.

Put them up on eBay. Do it before the non Paypal thing kicks in.

If it actually gets to eBay requiring bank account info, just set up a separate account that you only use for eBay. Then they have limited access.

And never put in (at ebay) your major banking account info. I can just see that once they try and ding your newer account (for a reversal) and fail, they then would try reaching into the account you've stated that you no longer use, and grab the cash there. They don't play by the rules they set up if it is not advantageous for them.

It's real and not some phishing scheme, they've been talking about it and switching people over for months now. I'm not worried about giving them my bank account info, I've gotten paid that way for Amazon sales for years. I just don't want to switch because I like having my money immediately rather than waiting a week. They haven't hit me up to change yet but in time they will.

If true, eff that and eff them. I haven't sold in over a year (member since 1997) and was starting to ramp up again with loads of cool import/prog/rare cds. But I always offer things here first anyway so maybe it won't be an issue :agree:

I bought my first item (with Paypal) from someone on mangled payments yesterday. It used to be my receipt said (Purchase from <seller's legal name>), now it says I have "Authorized a Payment to eBay". The old way broke out purchase, tax and shipping on the receipt, just the gross amount appears on the new receipt.

I didn't buy anything from eBay, I bought it from some guy who I now know only by his eBay handle.

Yes, it was in my ebay messages. It's legit. I went through my ebay account to setup the management payments. They will contact all sellers by 2021 about making the change. Most will be contacted by the end of this year.

Paypal is still an option to receive payments through the end of the year, after that, it's managed payments or you don't sell. For the buyer, they buyer can still use Paypal as a form of payment. The end of using Paypal is for sellers.

Thanks. I need to get some things up listed and sold by then I guess.

I don't see myself as a regular seller there. One-offs now and again only after I sell these certain things I have off.

    Buyers can still use PayPal.

eBay sellers are being forced onto eBay managed payments, which only connects to a bank account--not to PayPal.

So buyer pays PayPal, eBay acts as middleman, eBay transfers payment into your bank account.

It sucks IMHO because I liked having a separate PayPal account that I only used for eBay buying and selling. I don't like cominging my money from eBay.

Yes, I know, I can open a separate checking account for eBay, and I may do that. But it's more hassle and a drag.

One upside is that eBay is not allowing a 6 month window for disputes, so in theory once the 30 days are closed on a sale, you're done, whereas PayPal allows 180 days. However, I won't believe it until I see it that if a user opens a dispute with PayPal that eBay won't pass that on to your account.

Interesting that once it is no longer in "their" favor to offer 6 months to return, they close off the window period to 30 days. They are just too much. Too much for me to believe in.
