My Bull Moose order just arrived and listening to it now. Pleased with it, but what is it with boxset designers making it near impossible to get the discs out of their sleeves? Of course, no protection for the discs, so they're scuffed and glue on the discs. The design is like the live 1969 box and the discs are freakin' hard to get out and if you're not careful, you can rip the the book / sleeve the discs are housed in. The music.......sublime.
Oh yeah, it looks like they have bundled my Elvis with two other CD's, the brand new Lee Brice and Colin Raye albums, and they show a delivery for UPS by tomorrow. Wow, the tracking shows it is still in Connecticut, so I am not sure it is really gonna get here by tomorrow night, but usually UPS tracking is pretty reliable for me. Even if I get them by Friday, I would be thrilled.
Mine just shipped and it says it will be delivered tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I have been looking forward to this set quite a bit. I think this is a top 4 session for Elvis. (Sun, '69 American, '60 Nashville, '70 Nashville).
I am pretty pumped about it as well, especially based on the great sound from the samples we have all heard. Nashville '70 is also one of my very favorite studio sessions.
I've sampled it on Spotify and it's simply great! It's nice to have the undubbed versions of How The Web Was Woven, I've Lost You and Mary In The Morning in great quality. They had previously only been available from acetates. Rags To Riches is the unrepaired take 3 which is released officially here for the first time.
Just checked this out on Spotify. I’m really impressed. Definitely gonna order a copy. Sounds to me like the best Sony/BMG Elvis release in quite a few years. I didn’t really start appreciating a lot of the 70’s studio material until I heard the undubbed sessions on FTD. I’ve never been keen on the orchestra, horn & vocal overdubs. To my ears, they tend to smooth out the raw vibe of the sessions and take away from the quality & impact of Elvis’ vocal. Listening to the Nashville masters in their raw undubbed form - complimented by Matt Ross-Spang’s warm, solid & well balanced mixes is a revelation. They kinda make the original overdubbed masters sound dated. Makes you wonder what they could do with the rest of the 70’s studio catalogue - possibly give it a new leash of life.
I preordered mine and sprang for the fastest shipping possible from Amazon (US) and I also get the Nov 24th delivery date, oh well. For that reason, I finally decided to take advantage of the auto rip feature for the first 2 CDs. I want to save the last 2, to listen to, when I actually have the physical set in hand. Hearing these in this stripped down, newly remixed form, reminds me of when I bought Essential Elvis 4: A Hundred Years From Now back in the mid nineties and what a revelation it was then to hear some these songs (as outtakes) in a non overdubbed form. I'm really looking forward to getting this.
My set arrived this morning. Came in a normal amazon envelope so crushed to hell. The Back cover was clearly done by the work experience kid, and the quality of the outer slip case and book is poor. The music is great, but as the HD stream on amazon sounds so good I'm questioning whether the price of the physical set is worth it.
Mines came crushed too. Same issue. It's going straight back. I've not opened it since its going back however it does all look rather flimsy. Thankfully autorip means I still get to listen to it today
This is unfortunately becoming the norm with Amazon shipments - at least from my personal and recent experiences.
You'd think it must be costing them a lot of money - although probably tax deductible - so there must be some benefit for them.
Once the discs are removed, put them in the sleeves used for Japanese mini albums. With the sleeves on they can be a tight fit to get back in but easy to remove by pulling the edge of the sleeve - it works and the discs are protected.
Good advice. I do the same with the 7" FTD sets. The center rings on many of the sets do not securely hold the discs.
Ordered mine yesterday and it arrived earlier this afternoon. Only had a very quick listen but it sounds great - gutsy, punchy mix. Wonderful to have all the undubbed masters in one set. It's been a long time since I was so excited about a new Elvis release. Looking forward to playing this loud and often in the coming weeks.
Just got a shipping notice, now showing up tomorrow! Hoping it shows up in better shape than some others have reported.
My set, which thanks to Covid is the first music related item I've bought in six months arrived a couple of hours ago from Amazon UK So far I've played disc one and I'm now about halfway through the second disc. I have to tell you all that this set does not disappoint in any way, the sound quality from both the mixing and mastering perspectives is excellent. The performances stripped of the orchestral mush they were caked in are a revelation, so good are they without the overdubs that its like being sat in on the session itself, all the muscians have their chance to shine and shine they most certainly do. Elvis himself can be heard like never before, there's also a feel and intimacy to the songs absent from the overdubbed masters, this is something that makes even the lesser numbers shine like never before. For anyone who is still sat on the fence with regards to buying this set, then I suggest you get off it now, go to the interwebs and buy this wonderful collection of songs that will now be my go to versions for these sessions. Same here. I requested a replacement and explained to them that it needs to be shipped in a box. We'll see what happens. Beautiful set. Got it ripped and will jam it later.
Tomorrow is better than next week! I just got a pleasant surprise - after showing a delivery date of next week, it just showed up now! Vinyl and CD Box. Because I am that sucker born every minute, I also purchased the 24/96 from HdTracks and have been listening to this all morning. What others have already said is true - this set sounds WONDERFUL! From a sound quality and mixing standpoint. It's hard to believe this was recorded in 1970.
Yes they've used several different styles of centre hub over the years. The ones I like least are the foam type as over time these can become brittle and therefor useless. One tip I picked up from a fellow member when locating the disc on this type is to twist the disc onto it which works well. I recently bought a supply of plastic pronged hubs with adhesive backs on E bay which I anticipate I'll be using on some of the 7" FTDs.
been listening on Qobuz and every second has been marvelous. the quality really is incredible, as johnnyq and others have pointed out it belies the 1970 date on the recordings. amazing document. and Qobuz's Windows app still sucks.
