I feel that there haven't been any movies released this year that are worthy of Oscar. I'm sure others will agree there are. Is it a result of the pandemic? Where are the thought provoking dramas, the movies that are talked about? I know theaters were closed for a while and as they've opened up there are less theater goers, but it also seems like an extreme lack of, "I've GOT to see that film" movies. Thoughts?

Here are GoldDerby's predictions as to what might be nominated for Best Picture: GoldDerby

And the postponement of next year's ceremony was announced months ago. It'll be on April 25. Eligibility period is 1 January 2020 to 28 February 2021 (a two-month extension).

Or, people will actually have seen more of them because they streamed them as they were stuck inside.

Of course, many things were postponed-- but I think most of them were movies that probably were not going to be contending for Oscars anyway outside of the visual effects category.

  11. Wow. I’ve only seen five films on that list.

Hollywood loves to pat itself on the back in the most grandiose way possible, and some pesky little pandemic won't get in the way. They will find a way to make it happen.

I can’t believe how much I could absolutely care less about it when there was a time many years ago I loved watching it. Just seems so trivial and irrelevant to me these days.

Not sure if there's another thread about this, but the Academy Awards are this Sunday.. I've seen seven out of the eight nominated films, which takes in a lot of the best actor/actress/etc stuff too (tho not all, of course).....

a smaller amount of films released in 2020, I would guess, tho some high-quality stuff. The seven films of the eight nominated that I saw (i didn't see 'promising young woman' but did see the others) were all very good indeed, I thought.

  18. Boredom. Seriously, very few of the films in contention are all that great.
