"Black Queen" had to go in round 4.

Four tracks remaining for round 5. All of these tracks from the album's A-side.

Based on the results of the previous rounds I do not make out a clear favorite for the win.
But let's move a step ahead and vote off another track in round 5.

    Discussion question:
    What about cover versions?
Are there any favorite covers from songs of Stephen Stills' debut album that you want to share with the crowd here?

    01) - 04) ...
    05) Black Queen (round 4)
    06) Sit Yourself Down (round 3)
    07) We Are Not Helpless (round 2)
    08) Church (Part of Someone) (round 2)
    09) To a Flame (round 1)
    10) Cherokee (round 1)

I don’t know of any official cover versions. Stills sat in with the Grateful Dead for 2 concerts in New Jersey in 1983 playing “Black Queen” at one and “Love The One Your With” at the other. “Black Queen” was a lot better.

As a junkie for covers I will start with an early one.

The Voices of East Harlem - Sit Yourself Down

The Voices of East Harlem were an early 70s vocal group originating from a community initiative in East Harlem.
They recorded four albums between 1970 and 1974.
The cover of "Sit Yourself Down" was not an album track, but was released as the B-side of their single "Oxford Town" (a Bob Dylan cover) on Elektra Records in November 1971, just one year after the original had been included on Stephen Stills' debut album.
Produced by the great Donny Hathaway.

Going to vote for Love The One You're With. Great song and pragmatic rather than cynical. I reckon. :)

However, I like all the songs left about equally and it would be nice to see something other than the hit win. :righton:

If you're voting FOR this song then you should choose to ELIMINATE another song. Right?

The Three Degrees - Love the One You're With

"Love the One You're With" was covered by soul artists quite frequently.
The Philly vocal group The Three Degrees recorded a cover of the song for their album "So Much Love", released on Roulette Records in 1975.

"Old Times Good Times" once again in round 5.

I think there are some good, but no outstanding cover versions of songs from Stephen Stills' debut album.
I always had a soft spot for this cover:

    Rusty Wier - Black Queen

Rusty Wier was an underrated singer-songwriter from Austin/Texas.
He started as the drummer of the Austin-based garage rock band The Wig, whose 1967 single "Crackin' Up" was included on volume 1 of the "Pebbles" series of compilation albums.
In the seventies, he turned to country rock and released some fine albums between 1974 and 1977.
His cover of Stephen Stills' "Black Queen" was included on his final 70s album "Stacked Deck", released in 1977 on Columbia Records.
Rusty Wier passed away in 2009.

So which sing did you vote off?

Presumably Love The One You're With because you want another song than the hit record to win.

This seems to happen quite a lot. If the best song was a hit people vote it off. Weird.

Thing is as much as I love it, I enjoy the others as least as much so I voted for it to be voted off. :)
