This clip was recorded from a Chicago, IL area radio station back in the '70s. The most widely accepted lyrics are "Sometimes we're part of the laughing. Sometimes we're part of the crying. We are part of it all. I keep looking for that sunset I don't know when it'll be." Due to the poor quality of the clip, those lyrics could certainly be a little off. Any ideas or help identifying this would be greatly appreciated!

I think the song might have been recorded between 1970 and 1974, It sounds like it was inspired by George Harrison's first two albums

I like how the Youtube clip is titled, "Unknown Progressive Rock Song" and the guesses in this thread are for prog rock stalwarts America, England Dan & John Ford Coley, Bread and Firefall.

Yes, it's not prog, sounds like mid 70's soft rock. Probably would be identified by now if it was a major label band. It's not Bread or America.

I can't listen to the clip right now. Is it possible that it's a commercial as someone mentioned above? Also, where does the Chicago radio station info come from?

I agree that the song sounds more soft rock than prog. Some more info: The clip was originally uploaded to watzatsong years ago. The song possibly being a commercial jingle has been suggested before but the guy who recorded it is adamant that it was a real song and not part of a commercial. He liked the sound of it so he started recording, but only got the final 38 seconds. He thinks the station could've been WXRT or WBBM. Those stations were contacted and so far have been unable to help. Thanks everyone so far for the suggestions. I'm hoping someone out there will eventually recognize this but it just seems very obscure.

Remember how they wanted David Gates out of Bread when he insisted on the floral costumes and the extended synth solo in "Baby I'm A Want You?":shh:

I have or have heard almost all of the officially released songs, along with most of the rare Paul Williams/Roger Nichols demos and while I agree that it has a touch of Paul Williams, I really don't believe that it's him, nor his short-lived band The Holy Mackerel. I played this clip for my longtime New York (formerly Ohio) musician friend and he didn't have a clue and believe me, this type of soft mellow pop is right up our alley!

My guess, as a radio personality of almost forty years now, is that this is more than likely a local Chicago area band that the program and/or music director were attempting to break, but they were sadly forgotten? They have a real feel of England Dan & John Ford Coley and Firefall, but no way is it them or Bread. I'm guessing mid to late 70's?

It sounds a little like a commercial, but I am not sure what product they would be selling with those lyrics.

To me it sounds like Southern California sunshine pop from the mid to late seventies. I am not real sure about the purported Chicago connection.

Chewing gum, some mid-west brand of soda, floor cleaning products....I could see this being the case.

I agree with you on every count except "sadly forgotten" . Some bones are better off buried. It sounds amateurish and overproduced.

I was thinking a radio spot, but it could definitely be a television commercial or a local market theme song for a boating or travel show. In fact it sounds a little like a TV spot recorded with a handheld cassette deck.

Sounds like the theme song of a TV sitcom from the late '70s.
