I've had three pre-orders, all showed 'out of stock' once release date arrived. I cancelled one at the request of Amazon, and the other two arrived a couple of months later.
I got on to Amazon chat to complain a week after the release date as it was still showing 'out of stock' and the person admitted that they didn't have stock, had never had stock, and couldn't say when or if they would get stock! They then suggested it might be easier to cancel the order, which I did as I could get it at JBs for a bit more than the Amazon price, plus Amazon offered me $10 credit for the hassle.
Ok....I really don't understand what their business model is listing stuff they have no intention of getting....are they just relying on 3rd party sellers to have it available there soonafter release or the US/UK branch? Very annoying to say the least!

My friend ordered the Tom Petty Wildflowers and they it took ages for them to actually get it in stock, meanwhile the algorithm was sending me emails telling me I should order it. When I finally did (a few weeks ago) they still haven't dispatched it.

Yep - currently I'm glad that I pre-ordered the From Elvis in Nashville 4 CD box from JBs, which should arrive today. Amazon had it $5 cheaper for pre-order but the listing has since disappeared and they now only seem to have the vinyl version through 3rd party sellers. I think I'm done pre-ordering from Amazon unless the price is amazing.
I ordered the Tom Petty on the 9th and they've just sent me an email with a delivery date today. I've got it on my HD anyway but my point is they must have sent me 5 emails trying to convince me to order it while they were screwing around with my friend on the same product. Last order came in two days delivered by FastWay
If I want to preorder - not prepared to wait and definitely want it in my hands - I never use Amazon - usually JPC.DE who are very reliable even if the shipping is slow (about 6 weeks).
I'd check JB HiFi's prices on Friday to see if they have 20% off music. They are pretty good at refunding the difference if you bought the item recently.
Sadly I noticed that the Strand Arcade JB HiFi seems to have halved their CD space and taken about a 1/3 of their DVD/Blu ray shelving away.... the death of the disc is coming

A new Amazon low point. I ordered a Doctor Who Fury of the Deep dvd as part of an order on Nov 17. It was 'in stock' as it was released on Nov 11 (I've seen it in-person at my local JB and Sanity). My Amazon order has a delivery estimate of Nov 27-Dec 10, but the Amazon page for the item now says it hasn't been released yet but you can pre-order and it comes out on Dec 16! I spend 20 minutes with an online chat person who just didn't understand the issue - they can be so maddening sometimes!
For a massive company that specialises in inventory & logistics, their stock management is disgraceful.
I do do pre-orders with them and sometimes they come though but when it becomes "temporarily unavailable" (like the PF DSoT live 3 LP set is at the moment which I preordered on the 18/10/20 when it was available) I start a chat and point out that its available in the US , whats the problem? Twice now recently when this has happened they have said you could cancel the AU order and get it from the US - and Ive said (if) its cheaper here and asked for it at the same price as the AU order (and if its not I don't point that out ) and they have said sure same price Then as I'm a prime member I also point out that the AU order would have been free postage, so then they have offered to refund the postage And they have also thrown in 10 bucks for the inconvenience. Im about to to the same chat very soon for the PF set - and Ive used in the other 2 previous instances (that they have done this already) as a precedent so they cant back slide
