Both discs 24 bit remastered (2006) by Kirk Felton at Fantasy. There is a very informative 8 page booklet included in the package. A terrific bargain priced pick up for me as I currently only have two selections out of the 17 on this double compilation. A re-issue of the out of print Joe Henderson Milestone box set would be good!
Morning I had forgotten how great Blakey is this 1955 session . Despite being down in the mix on some tunes and despite the meh recording of the drums ,( man how great was RVG at getting the drum sound over at Blue Note in comparison), he is often throwing an interesting and unexpected heated accent roll, off beat punch or some unusual rhythm — allways building excitement...
If you dont know the full lp of Power to The People its well worth getting on its own. Often my favourite Henderson Lp and I love pretty much everything hes done.... supurb playing but the songwriting is really Especially wonderful, bears being playing repeatedly very well
Waking up this morning with some Christian McBride. His Inside Straight group's Kind of Brown. Digging the opener right now, Brother Mister, the perfect balance of lively and calm to get up to with.
Power To The People is the only other Joe henderson title I have on Milestone. I was really disappointed with it because it turned out to be a secretly issued Keepnews Collection CD-R edition. No problems though with the music!
I got the groove on some Harry Edison yesterday featured on Back to Back - Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges Play the Blues. Listening to the prominent players on the record it should have been Harry and Johnny Play the Blues. I'm surprised there isn't more music available featuring Harry Edison. Outstanding trumpet player!
After touring with Basie for many years, Harry Edison became very weary of the difficulties of touring and facing severe discrimination in transportation, housing and dining, so he decided to settle in one home and make his living primarily as a studio musician in Hollywood. He did television and film work, but also recorded very extensively as a supporting musician and was often featured in short solos. But he did make a pile of LPs under his own name. His discography is actually pretty large It is not surprising that Harry decided to do something else besides being told he had to use the back door, could not eat in the clubs he played and not get paid by record companies or club owners. At least while Norman Granz was producing records, Harry got an honest paycheck from Granz, first in the Verve years and then in the Pablo years. Because of his extensive studio work, Harry might be one of the most frequently recorded trumpet players in history.
The parks puffin is giving it an A grade and it sounds pretty nice so far, mastered by Kevin Gray.... happy with the purchase... heard some folks were getting incorrect lp’s in the jacket, mine were all labeled correct and look good... Same. Hard not to imagine Louis Armstrong's voice on certain trademark songs. How do you like this sound-wise? I'd been looking at this version of Freedom Suite recently, contemplating a shoot out between VMP Ryan Smith version and my original LP. The Keepnews CD was so-so, and got traded after sourcing the original. NP: Roy Eldridge - Dale's Wail @Berthold - We're both on a Little Jazz kick I'm listening to the Gilbert Kong-mastered version that includes the LP above ("Little Jazz"), Dale's Wail LP and Rockin Chair. First listen, and strong recommendation—another AAA twofer that can found in clean and inexpensive copies ($2-3) by an outstanding mastering engineer. Reading the liner notes I see sound restoration credits. My assumption is that with no mention of AAA, there was a digital stage before Kevin Gray mastered at Cohearant. Does anyone else know? @scotti noted that Resonance is not AAA in this thread - which seemed to refer to the label's entire output. I suspected the same as while they use Grundman and Gray for cutting, and have access to the tapes, there's consistent reference to a restoration stage. My current strategy with Resonance given the outstanding live recordings they publish is to stream CD quality on Qobuz (much of the catalog is available), and consider downloads at 192khz of titles that aren't streamable. What do others do?
Joe Pass - Summer Nights Joe Pass - Acoustic/Electric Guitar John Pisano - Acoustic Guitar Jim Hughart - Bass Colin Bailey - Drums Recorded at Group IV Recording Studio, Hollywood - December, 1989
Welp, the positive impressions where too much, I just sprung for the 3 RSDBF jazz items I missed: Rollins in Holland. $70 seemed not too bad considering what the popular 3xlp Resonance sets tend to go for on secondary The LP excerpt from the new Elemental release. The John Batiste EP. Now my twitchy collector's heart can rest slightly easier.
I don’t know, but I will dig a little deeper over the weekend At any rate Sonny is dealing on this one...
